Well, they did do their best album in 2006 so that is relatively recent.

How do you mean? Killers was released in 1981!

Yeah, I heard the album leaked.
I am going to get the CD soon, but I have to load up some single malt Scotch before, and maybe a few Trooper IPAs and Fear of the Darks in the fridge and make a night out of it.

I like Stratego much better than the first one released. Sounds more like Maiden to me. I’m getting a Brave New World vibe from this one.

I won't listen to any more songs. I'd rather wait until the cd is in my hands.

I just wish they had shortened some of these songs. There’s one 4 minute song and the rest are anywhere from 7-12 minutes.

The song Senjutsu is boring AF! I liked the main riff, but then that chorus or bridge or whatever it is around the minute and a half mark, and repeated over and over through the whole song is a real yawnfest. And what's up with Nicko? The drums never changed, the tempo is slow and just meh! His fills are all the same and generic. He's quickly gone from one of my favorite drummers to least favorite. Used to be such a beast, now he's lazy.
Hell on Earth is a better song. At least the chorus isn't irritating, and I like the mellow part in the middle, around the seven minute mark. For a twelve plus minute song, it goes by pretty fast, which is good. The shorter Senjutsu song, I couldn't wait for it to end. I'll still probably buy it, but I honestly don't see it in a constant rotation for very long. Much like most of their newer stuff. Time will tell once I hear it in full and on my real stereo.

This one will obviously take hours and repeated spins to properly digest.
Once i get the cd, i am scheduling a whole week of listening sessions.
I hope there's some true magic hiding in there.

Remember the days when you could buy a new maiden album, and just listen to it for the first time and say "fuck yeah this album rocks" without having to digest it after several hours? I miss those days lol

You bet i do.
Why can't they just make it simple. Priest have been delivering some amazing and so-easy-to digest albums.

Agree on all levels! It's sad to say that Maiden (who for the longest time has been my favorite band-tied with Savatage) haven't had an album make my top 10 in over a decade. New Frontier took ages to finally click with me, about half of the last one clicked right away but the other half took a while to sink in, and it looks like this one will be more like New Frontier and will take me quite a while to get into.

Man, i still can't digest The Final Frontier quite well. I am gonna spin The Books Of Souls on my way to work today.
Training my ears for Senjutsu, which should hopefully reach my shores in the next 2 weeks. Amazon have been quite fast lately.

What helped me with Final Frontier was tackling the songs individually instead of the full album. A while back I did a full shuffle of Iron Maiden's songs and the songs on that album were a lot easier to digest. I actually gave up on the album at one point but Jorn covered the title track and I realized how good that song was (especially with the intro cut out) and it convinced me to put it on the Maiden shuffle (the first time I did a shuffle, I did not include that album).
Here is the Jorn cover:

That's what i did with Book Of Souls. Spinning songs individually and separately, until i started noticing how good the album actually was.

I can still enjoy Maiden, I just need to adjust to them being closer to “easy listening” nowadays. The hard edge is almost completely gone. It’s unfortunate because Motörhead and some other older bands still cranked out some hard rocking stuff up until the end.

I have been through the album a couple of times. I like it but I do think some of the songs should be shorter. I think the Powerslave format (shorter songs and then one epic song) fits Maiden the best.
