I think Melissa was their best female singer Shame she left.

I like VoA. I think their last CD was their best, mainly because the songwriting was more consistent overall. The first two, and their demo, were pretty spotty. And the dude needs to stop singing. Or get better.

Visions of Atlantis has been on my radar for some time now. Not sure why I've not picked up an album yet. I need to.

XD Everyone says that about him! Poor guy! I can't believe so many people slate vOA as Nightwish copycats though. Jeez! They are clearly different bands but of the same genre.

I heard stuff from 'Trinity' and deemed the band as having no songwriting.

And while I like 'Dark Passion Play', I also feel like adding that I miss when Nightwish was harder to categorize. Nothing really sounds like 'Oceanborn'. Sure, you've got those Strato roots (no matter what the band says about how they plugged in and suddenly power metal magically came out..no, they sounded like that because of their countrymen), but then there was that dynamic songwriting, the extremely esoteric bent to the lyrics, the flourishes which were 'classical' in aesthetic but not ethos....oh, good stuff.

So maybe the songs aren't the best in the world...
And referring to Nightwish! Oceanborn <33333 It's a masterpiece and every song is so perfect.

I think "Dark Passion Play" is easily Nightwish' best album to date.
All their albums are fantastic though.

Why do you hate "Angels Fall First"? I agree it's their weakest album, but it's also their debut. They were young.
That album is quite good for me.
I'd rate it 8/10.
"Dark Passion Play" is a 10/10 though.
1. Dark Passion Play 10/10 2. Wishmaster 9.5/10 3. Once 9/10 4. Century Child 9/10 5. Oceanborn 8.5/10 6. Angels Fall First 8/10

Personally DPP is a 3/5. Am I the only one?
Anyways, updatesa from Tarja!!!
Quote :
My friends,
The final work for What Lies Beneath has started.
In these last couple of weeks I have been daily preparing the production, schedules, arrangements for the songs and for the album itself.
It feels great to be able to start the recordings very soon, since I have been waiting for the moment already for a long time. I am truly excited to witness how all will unfold!
The process for my second album started back in June 2008. Among the first songs that my friends and I composed at that time, a character called “Naiad” was born. The fantasy story of Naiad gave me the idea for the album title and for the whole album concept: What Lies Beneath.
Let’s start getting together into the spirit of the album.
Find here the lyrics of Naiad. It is a very important song in the album and means a lot to me personally.
Naiad
(Torsten, Angela, Adrian & Tarja)
She hears the distant soft caress there in the gloom. Colours surround with tenderness guiding her through. In the forgotten sweet abyss another sound twilight floating memories always without. Gloaming there above the surface an illusion reaching down for me. What lies beneath beyond the ocean’s door tranquil is the kiss of the azure rising deep sleeping ever more Naiad’s mystery what lies beneath. Guarding their immorality saints in the sand. Stranger than beautiful eerie an ancient land Circle of sixteen turned to stone and still they keep shimmering crystal promises one space between. Breathing the newborn waves. Kneeling for the sea she became.
The last touches for the music, last lines of lyrics and arrangements for the songs need to be done now before getting into the studio.
I have chosen the musicians for each song, the recording and mixing engineers and some the studios where the album will come alive.
We are also starting to organize the artwork and photos for the album.
It has been wonderful to be able to brainstorm again and decide the direction the album is going to take. I hope that you will be surprised again by my work; because that’s the way I like it
The recordings of the drums will begin on February 4th. I will be in touch with you daily from the studio, so you will have a chance to read, see and maybe also hear what is happening there.
Until next time…
With love, Tarja

Don't know if anyone's heard of Hysterica or mentioned them in this thread, but I got a free CD out of a magazine with a track by them on it, called 'Girls Made of Heavy Metal', pretty catchy.

No. I really really enjoy the songs I enjoy, but the songs that I dislike, my sweet Lord, it's almost as bad as 'Once', most of which is just a nadir of artistry and feeling...*that* one is like a 1.5/5. Hey, does anyone else use RateYourMusic since we're doing the number system..? Here's mine: http://rateyourmusic.com/collection/orioncrystalice/oo,fmt.CD

Best Nightwish album has to be Century Child. Absolutely phenomenal. Dark Passion Play is a bit hit and miss, but certainly not a bad album. They just need to cut the chaff a bit.

I love about half of CC, but there are moments which foreshadow teh crappiness to come ('Slaying the Dreamer', chug chug, angsty vokills) and the album suffers from ballad-itis ('Ocean Soul'..great title, boring song)...
What they need to do is let Emppu freaking play once in a while....and is Tuomas even needed anymore on the albums, whatwith all the orchestra everywhere? Where is my cheesy harpsicord and electronic stuff? Damn you, sir.

Anyone else like Satyrian?
There was a time when I bought this female fronted metal stuff like there was no tomorrow. Now I'm pretty much done with this style but there are a few bands I still spin now and then. Nightwish is one and Satyrian is another.
Satyrian's one and only album (to this point) is all over the map stylistically speaking. Listen to a song like "Invictus" and it's got some growly moments, some slight industrial touches and some gothic vibes. Elsewhere there are moments that would not be out of place on a Blackmore's Night album.
Check it out:
