How good is RUSH?

Im not a fan of Rush at all, but I do find a couple of their songs ok and thats only the ones I hear on the radio etc. Tonight I was at FYE and they had a whole bunch of Rush remastered cds used and I was going to pick them up but I just couldnt do it. I like dream theater and they are influenced by them and Rush also has Neal Pert which everyone thinks I must really like his playing but I dont listen to them enough to get what he is or was all about so he isnt an influence on me at all. So I was wondering is Rush really something im missing in my collection or can I really do without them?

Rush rules. They are in my top 5 of all time, even the synth laden 80's stuff.

Honestly, one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time. I have their entire discography plus all the remasters. I can tell you truthfully that they are an acquired taste and either people love them or hate them ( same as Kiss or Motley Crue). I think that Ult's NLTM site does a great job with the reviews as Rush started out a bit different than most prog rock bands and have clearly defined parameters to each stage of their career. Scott does a terrific job of reviewing each cd and delineating these stages. I think this will help you more than me telling you where to start based upon my own personal preferences and favorite albums by the band. I am certainly not trying to denegrate the advice our metal brothers will give you, cause we all know how much knowledge is here and it might help. Get a sampling of all of it.

early period - Fly By Night
progressive period - A Farewell To Kings (since they didn't have 2112)
crossover period - Moving Pictures (a must-have in any collection)
80's synth period - Grace Under Pressure
90's - Counterparts
00's - Vapor Trails

Their 70's stuff is more just straight ahead hard rock/heavy metal. I'd start with their self-titled and go from there....but if you want to go by their used ones.....2112 and Fly By Night are great!!

Caress Of Steel is the weakest of the early albums, I'd try to find the self-titled one instead.

By the way, my local record shop carries all of these remasters from between $6.99-$8.99 new. I could always pick some up for you and ship them your way.

really? not bad... lemme think about it I just bought some other cds a few minutes ago. I was suppose to calm down on the spending lol that just made it tempting.... damn now i wont be able to sleep thinking about this lol

I agree, I never could stand Messiah that much, thats why I could never really get into Candlemass.

Oh, and Moving Pictures would be the best start, especially if you dont really enjoy them that much.

They are my fave band ever, so my opinion will be totally biased

I never could get into Rush much. I say download and sample some of it before you buy it.

Their early material is classic and a must, after 2112 they are hit or miss for me but I still have all their cds just a band I have to complete.
Watched their 85 concert on VH1 live from Germany and it was great as hell.

I guess you will have to venture into their catalog yourself but I think you have some good recommendations here!

Of the ones you listed as being available used, get 'em all but Counterparts. 2112 is one of my "desert island" albums; easily my favorite in their catalog. I also really love Fly By Night and Moving Pictures.

Early Rush is more straightforward hard rock and has no keyboards unlike latter day Rush. After Moving Pictures, I haven't liked much of anything the band has done. Too proggy and wanky.
