Awesome post, Trog!!

The second pressing of the original version with "These Boots" removed is a waste of time, IMO, since it's the exact same release minus one song. The original pressing with that song intact isn't that hard to find - in my experience.

When I bought "KILLING" on CD a while back, I didn't even know that "These Boots" had been removed from the album till I got it home. It wasn't till later that I found out about the legal hassles with Lee Hazlewood. I bought that CD to replace my old cassette copy when that crapped out years ago. When I realized "These Boots" was missing, I was NOT happy about it either. Evil or Very Mad

And finally, a word on the cover art of the original pressing: I had been a huge fan of Megadeth through their demo tape and a bootleg of the show I attended at Ruthie's Inn in Berkeley in November of 1984. So, I was VERY ANXIOUS for their debut album to come out. When it did, having been into not only their music, but the concept artwork as well, I took one look at the cover and almost puked. How could they replace that kickass artwork with an inferior picture of a plastic model skull that looked like a 6th grader's science project?!?!? I was VERY disappointed in the artwork at that time. Later however, I heard that the record company (sigh) thought the original version of the logo was too violent and replaced it with the watered down version at the last minute. Good thing the album was good enough to overcome that awful presentation.

I am probably in the minority here, but I actually prefer the "old" cover. Yea, I know, it's cheesy as hell, it looks like the cover to a very cheap straight-to-DVD horror movie, but that's the version I grew up with so I like it better than the cover on the remaster. It's a scuzzy lookin picture for a scuzzy sounding album!! I had a back patch with the "old" picture on it and rocked it proudly on my denim vest for many years!!! 🤘

Yeah, I suppose it's a two-edged sword though. DO you just take the album out of print entirely or do what Dave did? I suppose for the good of the fans, taking it out of print would have just made it that much harder to find and hear for those who hadn't yet. Neutral

I can understand that. Familiarity can be a powerful thing when it comes to music. It works the same for me, just in the opposite direction - I expected something great and was given something I saw as inferior.

But there have been instances where I prefer the altered art too. For example, I prefer the changed covers over the originals on the SCORPIONS' Virgin Killer (changed for a VERY good reason, IMO) and Lovedrive (I find the original cover boring and much prefer the more colorful and "metal looking" edited cover). This stuff is all very subjective and can't really be regulated in terms of "right and wrong", so I totally understand your position. For what it's worth, I appreciate the original cover more since the remastered artwork came out, just because it's the "original" and the one I also "grew up with".

It's not it. It's just the logo, sans Vic.

Trog, I am almost positive that the Vic drawing you're searching for is in the inside cover of a CD release of KIMB. One of the ones with the plastic skull cover, I'm almost certain it's the one without These Boots. It's shown beneath where you keep the CD in the case. Sorry if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure a friend of mine has it.

That is how the actual band name was on the original Vic logo, but that pic is without the skull and crossbones, like ult said.

I used to have the original Combat version, but I traded it for Badlands s/t. Good trade, IMO, and the remaster is good enough, even with the mangled version of These Boots. I did keep a copy of that song from the original, so I might make myself that disc Randy has with the original version reinserted. Cool idea.

Is it me, or does it look exactly like Pantera's original logo too?

Currently, I have only the version with the original artwork but without "These Boots". I'll eventually get the recently-remastered version as I'm wanting to complete the side spide image of Vic from all the cds.

As for the music, I love this album. When I first bought it, I was expecting it to sound a lot like Kill Em' All. While there are similarities, KIMB still has its own sound. The thing about Megadeth that I find so interesting is that they've followed a similar path to Metallica as far as how they each evolved musically (from straight-forward to technical to progressive to radio-friendly to more hard rock-like sound), yet Megadeth has always been more raw and less serious about themselves. Even when Megadeth began putting out more politically-conscious music with complex compositions, the band still maintained a certain old-school thrash mentality. Even though Dave might have developed a taste for money and fame, the music always seemed more down to Earth (if I'm making any sense).

Anyway, this album sounds more raw and simple that Kill Em' All. Although I like Kill Em' All (and all of Metallica's 80s albums) more, I really appreciate the very stripped-down sound of this album. I love the variety as well. The title track is my favourite tune.

I have the original on Combat with "These Boots". It's not a song that I listen to all that much when I put the C.D in, but it's still nice to have the original!

You won't need it to complete Vic, it was from different sessions and on a different label, so it doesn't have Vic.
