ICED EARTH mastermind Jon Schaffer has teamed up with his old pals in PURGATORY, the band that he originally founded in 1985, then later became ICED EARTH, to record five tracks that were written between 1985 and 1987, now to be released as the "Purgatory" EP on December 21 through Century Media. All five tracks featured on the EP offer real U.S. metal and perfectly capture the spirit of the mid 1980s with a powerful production, rounded up by liner notes or comments of Schaffer, Gene Adam, Greg Seymour and Bill Owen and fitting cover artwork by David Newman Stump and Roy Young, known from their excellent work on ICED EARTH's latest album, "Incorruptible". The greatest surprise might be Gene Adam, ICED EARTH's original singer who sang on the band's self-titled debut album from 1990, who delivers his best vocal performance ever. The song "Dracula" can be checked out below.
"Purgatory" is dedicated to Richard Bateman, the band's original bass player, who passed away right before the EP went into production.
The "Purgatory" EP can be pre-ordered here.
"Purgatory" track listing:
01. In Your Dreams (4:55) 02. Dracula (6:08) 03. In Jason's Mind (5:03) 04. Jack (4:00) 05. Burning Oasis (5:38)
Jon Schaffer's PURGATORY is:

On that link it shows only vinyl and download as options, so for a moment I was afraid I can't get this on CD. But at least the German Amazon lists CD digipak as an option, so that's probably what I'll get.
It will be interesting to hear Adam. I really do like that first Iced Earth CD, and I don't know these songs, so I'll happily pay for this.
Funny Iced Earth also has a song called Dracula, but it's a completely different song.

Wait...so this Purgatory thing is newly re-recorded? It's not the same Purgatory demo stuff that was included in the I.E. box set a bunch of years back?

Right, this is different material. You're thinking of the Enter The Realm demo.

Ahh, gotcha. Thanx, I couldn't remember the name of that damn demo for the life of me when I posted this morning. Not enough coffee, haha.

Just heard that new/old song. I have some horrible-sounding MP3s of the originals, so this will be great to hear because the songs are really good. And holy crap! Gene Adam sounds f*cking awesome here! He and John Greely are, in my opinion, the weak links on those first two albums. Never would have expected Adam to sound so good 28 years later.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I looked at that Purgatory EP cover and just now saw all the horror movie characters in it. Obviously looking at the cover there's Jack the Ripper and Dracula. But then looking at the tracklist we have "In Jason's Mind" and there he is, Jason Voorhees, next to Dracula. Freddie Krueger is upstairs and obviously that corresponds to the opening track, "In Your Dreams".
EDIT: This is the cover

One of the flyers on the tree says Psychotic Dreams, which was the title to their 1986 two-track demo, which had the tracks "Jack" and "In Jason's Mind" on it.
There are a few more Purgatory tracks from back then, too—"Haunted House," "Purgatory," and "Bladed Chain" (about Leatherface, of course). Shame they didn't include new versions of those songs on this EP. Although "Purgatory" later became "1776" from Something Wicked This Way Comes and part of "Haunted House" was used in Demons & Wizards...um..."Tear Down the Wall," I believe. Either way, would have been cool nonetheless.
