"Godzilla" (2014)
Mega-budget 21st century re-boot of the Big Green Guy focuses less on monster mashin' chaos and more on the plight of the puny humans caught in the midst of it, but it still manages to be a fun ride... certainly better than the P.O.S. 1998 attempt by the "Independence Day" crew anyway.
Surprisingly, I liked this version. For one thing, there were lots of clear shots of the monsters. Like when Godzilla was menacing the Golden Gate bridge. Unlike the abysmal "Pacific Rim" which hid all it's monsters in various rain, night, smoke combinations, this version of Godzilla showed its monsters pretty clearly.
What I'm most excited about is that supposedly the next one is going to be a reboot/remake of the classic "Destroy All Monsters".

"Zombieland" (2009)
After the zombie apocalypse, a loner, a redneck and two sisters travel across the country to a California amusement park (?), having various goofy adventures along the way. This hilarious zom-com is kinda like America's answer to "Shaun of the Dead." Woody Harrelson steals the movie as "Tallahasee." Nut up or shut up!

Best of M3 Rock Festival (2012) on AXS TV.
First I found New Japan Wrestling on this channel. Then "The Voice" with totally uncensored interviews with the likes of Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Now this.
New Toho rule: Whenever there's nothing on TV to watch check out what AXS TV is showing. This concert features Great White, Stryper, Loudness, Lynch Mob, LA Guns, Quiet Riot and Queensryche.

Over the past couple days:
The Machine (2013) - not bad low budget sci-fi flick. **1/2
The Last Five Years (2015) - indie musical, a great showcase for Anna Kendrick. ***
I Origins (2014) - thought-provoking cerebral sci-fi. ***
The Imitation Game (2014) - well-made biopic about Alan Turing. ***
The Theory Of Everything (2014) - Lovely biopic about Stephen Hawking. ***1/2

Over the weekend :
Friday The 13th (1980) - the one that started it all (with an early appearance by Kevin Bacon)
Friday The 13th Part II (1981) - good ol' Jason starts the rampage
Friday The 13th Part III (1983) - more of the same, this time originally filmed in 3D
Friday The 13th Part IV:The Final Chapter (yeah right!) - the "final" film of the series and the only one I ever saw in the theater
Dead Snow 2 : Red vs Dead (2014) - I saw the original of this and loved it. This one was different if I remember correctly. The tone was a bit more comedic but the violence is over the top. Fans of Peter Jackson's Dead Alive will like this one.

"I, Frankenstein" (2014)
Frankenstein's monster, now named "Adam," returns from centuries of self imposed exile and finds himself caught in the middle of a war between demons and gargoyles, with the fate of the world in the balance. This incredibly silly action/fantasy flick isn't a movie; it's a special effects "sizzle reel" in search of a plot. Aaron Eckhardt looks like he'd rather be somewhere else, the dialogue is god-awful comic book crap, and the only one who seems to be having any fun is Bill Nighy as the head bad guy. It became obvious within the first ten minutes why this one tanked at the box office. Ugh!

I was going to try and stomach it just because I really like Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck), but I couldn't make it through 15 minutes. Abysmal is too nice a word.

Monty Python Live - 1 Down, 5 To Go
This is last summer's reunion show from the O2 Arena. Holy crap did they put a lot of money into this performance! Huge song and dance numbers for "Isn't It Awfully Nice To Have A Penis" and "Every Sperm Is Sacred". Plus the latter featured giant penis cannons on each side of the stage that shot white confetti "sperm" into the air.

"The Intruder" (1962)
An absorbing civil-rights drama directed by Roger Corman, about a racist agitator from the big city (a fantastic performance by a young, pre-Star Trek William Shatner, at his most despicable) who comes to a small Southern town to stir up the yokels just as court-ordered integration begins at the local high school. The movie was "ripped from the headlines" then, and it's a disturbing history lesson now. Fascinating stuff.
Interestingly, for many years The Intruder was known mainly as "the only movie Roger Corman ever lost money on." As you might expect, its initial release in 1962 was very limited due to the "too hot to handle" subject matter, particularly in the South. (a subsequent re-release unsuccessfully tried to sell it as an exploitation flick by re-titling the movie "I Hate Your Guts!").
Corman didn't finally break even on The Intruder till the 1990s when the producers of a documentary about Charles Beaumont (author of the novel upon which the film is based) paid to license clips from it for their film.
