It has been awhile since I have spun the disc and may give it a go before I go to bed, but overall I don't completely dislike it, I think there are some good songs on the album but I just don't think the songs are as memorable as he has written in the past.
This is how I would describe all Megadeth albums since Youthanasia... +1, although Risk for me was by far the worst.

| The World Needs a Hero is the worst by a mile (followed very closely by MD.45 ... ). I like Risk and I am also in agreement with Eyesore, Youthanasia is their best work, although Sleepwalker is probably my favorite 'Deth song. I can't say that I love Risk the same way that I love Bride's Drop but it is a great mellow rock album. Wanderlust, Insomnia, I'll Be There, and Breadline are all standout tracks. | |

Endgame and Super Collider are ok,. Yes, I also hear the same 1992-2001 riffs/ideas being recycled, but I like that. Thirteen maybe equals TWNAH for me. Strong songs, Good production.

| I don't really understand why bands who are not commercial, try to do a commercial record. I mean, I understand the thought of the money is why. But it seldom works out.
Metallica, I feel, is the only metal band who has really, truly succeeded. And by succeeded I mean financially. They obviously lost many of their old fans along the way, but gained a lot of money and temporary fans who jammed to "King Nothing" on alternative radio.
But most of the bands who tried to kind of follow what was going on in the 90s...they just regret the albums now and, aside from a small pocket of fans, people don't dig on the records. This goes for thrash bands, of course, and also the LA glam/sleaze bands that tried to alter their sounds to fit the mid 90s.

| While I have gradually warmed up to a few of the tracks over the years since I bought it as a new release, overall, I think Risk is a terrible album. It should have never been released upon this earth.
Still better than St. Anger though. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

| I remember reading a review of Risk in a hardcore/punk 'zine back when it was released. The dude recounted this time when he came home from school to discover that a bunch of workers were at his house, as his parents were having their bathroom remodeled. He didn't think much of it until one of the workers came in and said to his mom, we found these under the rug in the bathroom. He handed her the guy's stash of adult magazines.
The reviewer finished by saying that the shame he felt in front of his mother that day is the same shame Mustaine should feel for releasing an album like Risk.
That review always cracked me up. He mentioned nothing about the album, just told that story.

Yeah, that one is pretty terrible. I liked "Moto Psycho" when it was released, but I don't think I've ever made it all the way through the album in one listen.

| I heard the direction they were going in for Countdown (quick, copy Metallica's Black Album, big sales await!) and decided I wasn't interested in following them down that path. Rust In Peace ended up being the last Megadeth album I purchased.
I've heard some of their more recent albums and while they sounded decent they really just didn't hit me enough to bother buying them. |

| I'm a fan-boy, so aside from the mis-step that is Risk, I like every Megadeth album to various degrees. Some more than others, but none are unlistenable. I don't mind the direction/progression/recession/commercialism or any other paths the band has taken over the years. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. | No way. Cryptic has some great songs even with a few missteps and the drums don't sound like trash cans. | |

| From what I've read, Risk was equal parts wanting mainstream success (CW worked, so lets go even more in that direction) and secondly Dave wanting to keep Marti on board (he was bored of metal at the time) He failed on both accounts but I still really like some of it.

| I kind of forgot about the Marty angle. Has to be the first time Dave tried to appease a bandmate and it backfired on him. | |

| 'The World Needs a Hero' is another one of the those albums, where it seemed like Mustaine, thought I will give the fans what they want, even writting a sequel to 'Hanger 18', not a bad disc, but not very memorable one, and IMO it was just as calcaulting as 'Risk' | |
