Wait. Was this a Sci-Fi Channel original?

Wait. Was this a Sci-Fi Channel original? It might have been. I'd never seen/heard of it till I bought a cheap horror 12-pack DVD a few months ago. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| "King Kong" (1976) - Dino de Laurentiis' lavish update of the 30s classic has a suitably epic feel and delivers nicely in the monkey related carnage department, but the special effects (which were pretty hot shit for 1976) haven't held up well at all. Charles Grodin is in fine scenery chewing form as an unscrupulous oil company exec (well, it WAS the 70s), and this flick also happens to be Jessica Lange's film debut in the role originated by Fay Wray. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

That's the film that gave me the hots for Jessica Lange back in the day. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

She was also a terrible actress at that point, by the time she did Tootsie in 1981 she had matured in her craft by leaps and bounds. |

But I was 16 at the time; I couldn't have cared less if she could act or not. | Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa - pretty darn funny if you like those kind of jackass shenanigans. It was a little weird that the movie actually follows a plot-line, but whatever. I LOL'ed enough to make it worthwhile.
The Wolf of Wall Street - liked it, although you gotta block out like 4 hours to watch it. Not sure what could have been done differently to shorten it as it was still good. Probably should have started watching it earlier. Obvious similarities to other Scorsese classics. Think of it as a white-collar 'Goodfellas'. With much more nudity. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

Though I gotta say, after watching Lange chewing up the scenery (awesomely) all season on "American Horror Story," it was pretty funny watching her in "Kong" yesterday, playing a total ditzy bimbo in short-shorts... I even said to my wife, "She sure doesn't look like a future Oscar winner in this movie does she?" _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

How many pee breaks did you take while watching it to extend it to 4 hours? I think 3 hours is just fine for that film, I saw it in the theater and wasn't bored for an instant. Are there things that probably could be trimmed? Yes. Is it necessary to trim them? Evidently Marty didn't think so and based on his career I think he knows best. I still find it interesting that American Hustle and The Wolf Of Wall Street were both funnier than any comedies I saw the entire year. |

I still find it interesting that American Hustle and The Wolf Of Wall Street were both funnier than any comedies I saw the entire year. I wasn't bored or thought it dragged on too long. It was more about me staying up till 12:45. That's well past my normal bedtime. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. | The scene with Leo trying to get to his car at the country club is one of the finest pieces of screwball comedy I've seen since the Preston Sturges films on the mid 40s.

Oh yes I remember seeing that when it premiered. So disappointed. Isn't there a line early on about "penetration?"

| I decided to watch Oblivion (2013) again last night just to make sure my initial reaction in the theater still held true. I feel basically the same way about it. Truly beautiful film to look at (same cinematographer as Life Of Pi), impressive score and wonderfully paced. I think the first hour is just about perfect, unfortunately to me the more of the plot that is revealed the less interesting it becomes. The air of mystery and wonder in the first hour gives way to more generic plotting and action sequences in the second half. It feels like a film where they wanted to make a more cerebral, contemplative type sci-fi picture but felt pressure to insert plenty of action for the multiplex crowd. The other problem with the plot-driven second half is how closely it resembles several other recent (and better) sci-fi films, most obviously Moon (2008).
Still, overall it's a good movie that comes frustratingly close to being a great movie. Even with the flaws it's one of the better major studio releases from 2013. |
