| "Sherlock Holmes" (2009)- Guy Ritchie reimagines the famed sleuth as a 19th century action hero played by Robert Downey Jr. (?)in this overlong, muddled mystery. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

Those movies are complete turds in every conceivable way. Watch the two fantastic series "Sherlock" and "Elementary" instead, intelligent modern-day retellings that get it right (and they are both very different from each other so it doesn't get repetitive). |

| I've always imagined a club with Guy Ritchie, M. Night Shamylyanyan [sic], and Tobe Hooper would be fitting. Maybe Michael Cimino could head it. | |

| Yea, Downey's "Holmes" pretty much sucked. Haha. Jude Law, who played Watson, probably would've been better as Holmes. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

- I decided to watch Oblivion (2013) again last night just to make sure my initial reaction in the theater still held true. I feel basically the same way about it. Truly beautiful film to look at (same cinematographer as Life Of Pi), impressive score and wonderfully paced. I think the first hour is just about perfect, unfortunately to me the more of the plot that is revealed the less interesting it becomes. The air of mystery and wonder in the first hour gives way to more generic plotting and action sequences in the second half. It feels like a film where they wanted to make a more cerebral, contemplative type sci-fi picture but felt pressure to insert plenty of action for the multiplex crowd. The other problem with the plot-driven second half is how closely it resembles several other recent (and better) sci-fi films, most obviously Moon (2008).
Still, overall it's a good movie that comes frustratingly close to being a great movie. Even with the flaws it's one of the better major studio releases from 2013. That's basically the way I felt about it when I saw it in theaters. I think I'd be interested in seeing how the screenplay evolved and I'd be willing to bet it was originally much more interesting in that second half of the film in earlier versions of it.

| "The Taking of Pelham 123" (2009) - Hijackers take a New York City subway train hostage, and the gang leader (John Travolta) plays a series of head games with a Transit Authority dispatcher (Denzel Washington) while the city scrambles to come up with the ransom. This remake of a 1970s thriller descends into typical action-movie nonsense in the last quarter but up till then it's a pretty decent suspense flick. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| "A Talking Cat?" (2012) Craptastic no budget kid stuff about a sassy feline (voiced by Eric "Julia's Brother" Roberts, of all creatures) that helps bring two troubled families together with its mystical powers. Yes, really. This awkwardly scripted, poorly acted, unfunny "comedy" could've used more of the cat and less of the humans.
Fun fact, according to IMDb this flick's director usually makes gay porn movies and does these cheap talking animal kid vids as a sidebar. That might explain the vaguely disturbing scene where the two teenage boys seemed like they were in such a hurry to hop in the pool together.
If your kids find this on Netflix and say "Oh cool, a cat movie, can we watch it?", for the love of gawd, grab the remote out of their hand and stop them!!
It's only mid February and I already have a "worst movie I've seen all year" contender!! _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

The original is a lot better. It's been a loooooong time since I've seen that but I thought it was a great movie.

| American Hustle - I didn't like it and didn't see what all the hoopla is about. I wanted to like it. I purposley avoided too much media overkill so I could watch it with an open mind, but I just didn't care for the characters. Christian Bale's character wasn't likeable at all, Amy Adams is too "cutesy" for the role she played and Bradley Cooper was annoying. I couldn't drum up any interest in the 3 main characters so it was hard to watch the rest of the movie play out. I just wanted it to end.
Saving Mr. Banks - the story of Walt Disney and the author of Mary Poppins and the shenanigans they went through getting the movie made. Better than I expected and helped cleanse the palette with something a little more light-hearted and a decent "feel-good" movie. Once in awhile, I need to purge the cynicism and negativity from my mind and remind me there is still some good in this world. This was a good movie for that. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. | The Hobbit:An Unexpected Journey - A very good movie. Visually stunning if a bit too long. Still, it makes me want to see the rest of the trilogy

Interesting. I saw it twice in the theater and could easily watch it several more times. My favorite film of 2013 by a comfortable margin. You also hated Silver Linings Playbook (my favorite film of 2012) so I'm thinking you might want to just avoid David O. Russell's films going forward. There's obviously something about them that doesn't work for you. Different strokes and all. ***** Last night I watched a couple episodes of Doctor Who (series 4) and also started season 2 of House Of Cards on Netflix. |

Different strokes and all. Maybe you're on to something there. A quick look on Wikipedia and I've only seen 3 of his movies, 2 of which I disliked. A lot. 'Flirting With Disaster' was a good one. Never saw 'Three Kings' or 'The Fighter', although I've wanted to. Maybe it's because his characters are very unlikable to me which makes watching the movie a chore. Lily Tomlin agrees with me. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. | 'Upside Down'. I know this is technically a bad movie.. I know..and the two-color palette ruins a lot of the nice visuals...and yet I enjoyed a lot of it, it did have a strong 'Brazil' vibe which I appreciated. I knew what I was getting into when reading the plot..
