Tons and tons of them
I think. at least from my perspective, is that a lot of those bands aren't in the mainstream and A7X is. That's why they get a lot of crap. The more people that like you, the more people will dislike you..

As far as the album goes. It's pretty damn badass..
When you can trace a band's stylistic shifts and match them up with shifts in mainstream musical trends, it's called "lack of musical integrity."
They're making money and that's great for them, but I'll pass.
It's called "Doing whatever you want." Most bands change album to album, and if they don't they get called "samey" or "not expanding their sound." But when they do change, they get called "Sellouts" or "Trendy?" I just don't get it..
Sure it's not groundbreaking or original. That doesn't make it bad, does it?
A guy posted this comment on their album...
I know I'm not gonna change anyone's opinion by saying this but hail to the king is an album that brings back the sound of classic metal, riffs inspired by Metallica, iron maiden, black sabbath, etc. this album is amazing and unique, it's an album with a sound you don't get from newer metal bands anymore, this is what metal should sound like. Disagree all you want, I don't care.
Oh, they surely can do whatever they want, but there are plenty of bands out there doing far better and not changing with the tides. Bands evolve, bands change, but these guys have changed styles numerous times in a VERY short period of time. That's not musical evolution; it's deliberate trend-following.
That's my issue with them as a band. I don't like them because the singer's vocals, I think, are pretty bad.
And there is a difference between being inspired by other bands and blatantly ripping them off. Sounding like another band is one thing, but that video above is entirely different.

No argument with the accusation of frequent style-changing by A7X but you know what? I don't care.
If I like what I hear, that's all that matters to me. And ripoff bands??? Ha! I specialize in 'em. I'm a fanboy for anybody who sounds like AC/DC and I really don't care how derivative that band is.
So again, I'm all in on the new A7X as long as I like what I hear and so far I do.

I ride the fence on this one. There's nothing wrong with disliking a band for being derivative--it is kind of lazy--but, as Toho said, there are a lot of derivative bands that I enjoy.
I haven't listened to these clips yet to pass judgement on Avenged.

Oh yeah, I definitely understand disliking a band if you think they're derivative.
But that's never stopped me from liking a band. My library is rife with AC/DC and Ramones clones.

So the vibe of the song has a similarity to Sad But True. Other than the vibe, it's not even close musically. Riff is way different, melody completely different, and the only resemblance is the drum work and production IMO..

But that's the difference. Sounding like another band is far different than writing songs that are blatant copies of other songs. Airbourne has a sound very similar to AC/DC, but no song I've heard comes off like a copy of any AC/DC song.
That's not really my issue with Avenged Sevenfold, though. I just don't like them, which just makes me far less forgiving of their constant style-hopping.

Dude, come on. Don't be willfully ignorant. The main riff is nearly identical. The pace is the same, the vocal patterns are the same. It's a rip-off. The chorus might be different, but come on, the rest is waaaaaaaaaaay too similar to suggest it's just a similar "vibe."

Heard Hail to the King (the song), it was...well, it was boring. Not a whole lot to write home about. Kind of understated.

That song's not too bad, I guess. I never paid the band any attention because of their earlier output but this is at least listenable to my ears. I wouldn't have caught the Sad But True comparison unless Eyesore hadn't pointed it out but yeah, it's in there. Still , I don't think I would be getting this.

Ok that makes more sense now. Obviously the verse is where it gets most criminal.
Metallica comparisons aside, it's not a very good song. It meanders with little regards for a standout hook. And BearOnUnicycle is right. I don't know if it's the vocalist or what, but they're just flat and boring. Almost like they're going through the motions, sleepwalking, call it what you will. Meh.

Like EYESORE said.. This album sounds nothing like their previous... I don't agree with that assessment on their previous albums. From Waking the Fallen to Nightmare I think their sound was pretty consistent musically. Sure Matt stopped screaming, and if Im correct, he told his producer he didn't want to scream anymore or do it nearly as much.
They are a good band and have some great songs that I like and are extremely talented. If you want to hear what the band is capable of this album is not one to start. They stated they were gonna do a classical type metal album and from what I've heard from the album, it's draws a lot of influence from 90's era Metallica and GnR...

It sounds like Sad But True, after it has been taken to the vet to get "fixed" because it's owners are fed up with it trying to hump the furniture!
That said I like it better than the old stuff I suppose, but it's a bit like saying that I'd like a punch in the face more than getting my head cut off.

That's pretty much always been my impression of these guys. With the exception of city of evil, they have never done anything for me. And even that record doesn't even get pulled out once every year. Just a band that falls flat for me. And it's not the singer, I actually don't mind him. It's the songs. A whole lotta meh...

I've heard their earlier stuff, well, at least I've seen the music videos when I was on my fuse kick, but yeah they lack a certain spark. They're a very weird band. I hear more energy coming from My Chemical Romance (I know, completely different band).
HOWEVER.
They are far greater...far, FAR f*cking greater...than the dimwits currently known as HIM.

I love The Black Parade... But they def don't lack energy...
Here is another song from the new album with a very GnR influence...
