Crazy talk. Supercharger has some terrible songs, man. And outside of the terrible songs, there are a number of seriously mediocre songs. No way that album is even close to being as good as the following three albums.
And I hereby declare this a fact.
The Blackening did nothing for me (more aggressive less melody), Unto the Locust is heavy but again I don't just look for heaviness in my music. and TTAOE would be very close to Supercharger. I love Supercharger, songs like Bulldozer, White Knuckle Blackout, Kick You When You're Down, American High (fav MH song), Nausea, and Trephination, all kick major ass as far as energy and hooks go.
1. Burn my Eyes
2. Supercharger 3. The More Things Change 4. The Burning Red 5. TTAOE 6. The Blackening 7. Unto the Locust

Load and Reload are not alt rock. St. Anger sounds nothing like System of a Down.
Won't argue the Death Magnetic thing.

I totally agree with this sentiment. I had an employee who, loved SOAD and hated Metallica so I played him St. Anger at work. He loved and quickly acquired a free copy of the (then) new Metallica album.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you two have either never heard St. Anger or System of a Down. Haha.

What I have heard of SOAD has been on the radio and about the time the local DJ's started calling them metal I quit listening to the radio. That being said, I have tried to listen to St Anger multiple times but I can't even make it through one whole song. I don't know what it is about that album but man, it is just CRAP.

On the SOAD thing, don't argue the point with me, argue it with Lars, he freely admits it. I agree that it doesn't sound like SOAD much, they are great, St Anger sucked! But in terms of style, yeah it's there.
I also never said that the Loads were alt rock, but they did try to join that very diverse scene and put some distance between themselves and the straight metal crowd, headlining Lollopalooza, the other bands they toured with, the new image, introspective lyrics, the haircuts, this!!
I mean, there really wasn't any make up or feather boas on Ride The Lightning!

I don't know what to think of those three albums other than they're a huge waste of time and just plain suck.

Load and Reload have some killer songs. Some of their best written imo. Sure it isn't the old Metallica but its still damn good in my eyes.

I didn't give a shit that they were moving away from thrash because, hell they made three GREAT albums and one near great album that had the best thrash music known to man, and then they fulfilled their it by releasing a good album full of heavy metal music, so I thought the move was good, but dude. I bought those two albums and tried my hardest to get into them, even pretended for a bit that they were awesome. Nope. Couldn't and can't enjoy a single song. James' voice hits each one of my nerves, the lyrics are laughable, the mix is flat, Kirk sounds confused, none of it works. The only positive thing I can say about them is that I can appreciate their efforts to grow somewhat, but that style of writing is just not in their genes.
St. Anger just isn't pleasant to listen to.

Load is 50% great, 50% lousy. Reload is 100% lousy, worse than St Anger.

Agreed. They could've done better job cutting some tracks off. And not recodring the other two Or one, as I've never heard St. Anger, but seen many opinions stating that St. Anger is a great album, or even Metallica's best and the only one they can listen to. So I believe it has some value.

I'm also f*cking sick of The Unforgiven Saga. They keep it going it'll be like a horror franchise (which I suppose would make Kirk happy).

No way. Neither Load nor Reload have a bad song, some are great, some are just good. St. Anger has a few good moments, but there isn't a single decent song in sight. It's complete shit front to back.

I still have to read all the answers on this post but i can see their are haters and lovers. I like what they released after CITY OF EVIL. Their new album is full with influences by METALLICA (from the black album). Tomorrow i will read everything on this post.

A lot of older metalheads hate them because they have young fans but back in the day, also RAINBOW or METALLICA had young fans. I dont think that back in 1984 many 38 year old guys were banging their heads watching MAIDEN live for exemple. Today all those bands have young and old fans. Also A7X with their new strong album are going to get fans that are older, in the 40s or 50s and of course all those young kids. Thats great.

I agree with this, it's not so much that I hate them, more that they are not for me, at all. I've been around long enough to have heard it all before and done a lot better, but if some 15 year old kid hears it and flips over it, that's pretty cool too, the originality thing does make me smile though as a lot of bands are heavily influenced by the bands that they grew up with but these guys do venture into plagiarism territory a little too often for my comfort.

The album is very good. I never thought i would have an Avenged Sevenfold CD in my collection.
When i read that these guys were going "metal", i had serious doubts.
But after listening to this album, i'm glad i bought it.
This will definitely make my top 10 list for 2013.

Ok, so I bought Hail to the King and Nightmare. Was at Best Buy and figured why not. I haven't bought music from new bands in years, always repurchasing or getting newer stuff of bands, but nothing from the new crop of artists out there. I read through this thread before I bought the two albums and wanted to hear for myself what the deal was. A couple of good songs. From the opinions on this board, I kinda expected the disks to be silly money spent. Now I know what the kids today are buying. So disappointing to see the Rock section get smaller and smaller each year. A shame, really.

I heard Avenged Sevenfold on the modern rock station the other day. I'm pretty sure it was the first time I've ever heard the band, and it was the song in the title of this thread.
I can't remember many of the arguments in this 6-page thread, but I will say anyone who said these dudes were drawing (heavy) influence from Metallica's Black Album here is right on the money. Serious Black Album worship.
Except that I did not really dig the song at all, and I do dig the Black Album. I can definitely hear the influence. How that compares to their other work, I have not a clue, and likely never will.
