Soloing became cool again well before Avenged Sevenfold began doing it. They weren't the only band to jump on that bandwagon.

There isn't too many shred guitarists on the radio. In fact, there isn't that much "metal" in general on the radio. Synyster Gates, Mark Tremonti, Dan Donegan, are pretty much it when it comes to solos (shred) from modern bands.

There is ONE rock station in this area and I live in Northern Nj.... That alone sucks.. Thank god I have my phone and Spotify, bcuz the rock station leans more towards 80/90's rock and Classic Rock..

No matter where anyone stands on the album, that was hilarious.

Unfortunately it's also quite the second opinion. Now I'm compelled to give this a spin and perspective.

The Sad but True comparison is floating around on message boards everywhere. And I have a love-hate relationship with Rovi's reviews, but here it is anyway:

All those comparisons are pretty accurate. That riff in This Means War Other than the verse) still sounds nothing like Sad But True but the song in general vibe wise does def have a Sad But True sound.

If you're referring to The Burning Red and Supercharger, Flynn admitted long ago that those albums were, under pressure from the label, their attempt to go mainstream.

Avenged and Machine Head are two entirely different bands. Avenged has always been hyper-commercial, while Machine Head made that mistake twice and otherwise churn out some pretty original (and angry) music without much of a marketing militia pulling it along.

And The Burning Red is a great album. Supercharger has a lot of turds, but there are a number of really good songs on it.

I have to say that at least from the 90's onwards Metallica were massive trend hoppers!

I'm a huge Machine Head fan and I prefer Supercharger and the Burning Red over The Blackening, Unto the Locust, and Ttaoe in no particular order..

I've heard this before and I totally disagree. The black album was trendsetting. Load and Reload, while definitely more mainstream accessible, sounded nothing like anything else popular at the time. Hell, they still have a pretty unique sound. St. Anger, as shitty as it is, doesn't sound like anything else. Thank, God.

So that leaves Death Magnetic. I guess one could argue they followed the whole retro metal trend, but...I don't know, seems kinda silly to say a band was following a trend when they pretty much created it 30 years ago.

Crazy talk. Supercharger has some terrible songs, man. And outside of the terrible songs, there are a number of seriously mediocre songs. No way that album is even close to being as good as the following three albums.

Load & Reload - Attempts to capture the alt rock crowd
St Anger - Very, very influenced by the emergence of System of a Down
Death Magnetic - Thrash revival

I totally agree with this sentiment. I had an employee who, loved SOAD and hated Metallica so I played him St. Anger at work. He loved and quickly acquired a free copy of the (then) new Metallica album.

On the subject of Avenged Sevenfold, I have not bought any of the albums since City of Evil. I have have attempted to listen to them as one of my brothers is a huge fan. They didn't grab me at all. That is not to say that they are a bad band, just pretty mediocre really. I agree with the comments that they trend hop way to much and are trying a little to hard to be a "relevant" metal band, and in so doing they have lost my respect. Bands absolutely change over time, but not that drastically, unless you are Kid Rock  and trying to do it intentionally.
