Yes it was. I watched FUSE TV every day and listened to the radio nonstop. Rarely heard a shred solo, and I would've heard it because I've always been pro-shred. "Pro-shred." Don't know if I'll ever use that term again.

"Pro-shred." Don't know if I'll ever use that term again. Soloing became cool again well before Avenged Sevenfold began doing it. They weren't the only band to jump on that bandwagon.

| There isn't too many shred guitarists on the radio. In fact, there isn't that much "metal" in general on the radio. Synyster Gates, Mark Tremonti, Dan Donegan, are pretty much it when it comes to solos (shred) from modern bands.
There is ONE rock station in this area and I live in Northern Nj.... That alone sucks.. Thank god I have my phone and Spotify, bcuz the rock station leans more towards 80/90's rock and Classic Rock..

- MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn's latest installment of his online blog, "The General Journals: Diary Of A Frontman... And Other Ramblings - Life Affirming", reads as follows:
"Congratulations to AVENGED SEVENFOLD on their latest 'covers album' coming in at #1.
"Who knew that re-recording METALLICA, GUNS N' ROSES and MEGADETH songs could be such a worldwide hit!!?? Ba-dap Psssssss!! "I'm on fire!! "In case you've been living under a rock, AVENGED came in at #1 in multiple countries throughout the world. I'm happy for them. Good band. And while I like the new record, and really dug the last record 'Nightmare', hopefully we're all coming down from our post-orgasmic #1-album-bliss, because it's time to call a spade a spade!! It's time to poke a little fun at A7X, cause there's some blatant jackery goin' on there wiggas!! "So here are my top 10 jokes about the new AVENGED SEVENFOLD record:
10) AVENGED SEVENFOLD - 'Now with even MORE METALLICA' 9) AVENGED SEVENFOLD to change name to "SAD BUT TWO" "Number of 'spurting penises' drawn on AVENGED logos suddenly skyrockets 7) Eyeliner sales skyrocket as thousands of heartbroken goth girls realize 'Hail To The King' is actually 'that ugly AC/DC band's song 'Thunderstruck'.' 6) After hearing 'Heretic', Dave Mustaine flips out, blames Obama, METALLICA and UFOs for the A7X stealing 'Symphony Of Destruction'. 5) After seeing how much success the band BUSH had stealing other band names for song titles, A7X decided to steal 'In Flames' for latest chorus. Future chorus lyrics include 'Tr-vi-um' and 'Kill-switch En-gage' 4) Upon hearing latest album, Lars Ulrich goes all gangsta, breaks bottle of Dom Perignon on M. Shadows head, while his 11ft girlfriend put Shadows in headlock, as he screams in Shadows' face, 'You're gonna rip off 'St. Anger' next right, HUH? You're gonna rip off 'St Anger' NEXT RIGHT? HUH, HUH, HUH!!" 3) 'Black album' sales skyrocket as fans realize where new songs came from. 2) After hearing AVENGED's GUNS N' ROSES cover 'Doing Time', Axl actually calls Slash, says, 'Dude, what the F*ck?!' 1) And the #1 joke about the new AVENGED SEVENFOLD album: AVENGED SEVENFOLD release statement that they're NOT ripping off METALLICA, announce side project with Lou Reed. No matter where anyone stands on the album, that was hilarious. Unfortunately it's also quite the second opinion. Now I'm compelled to give this a spin and perspective.

| The Sad but True comparison is floating around on message boards everywhere. And I have a love-hate relationship with Rovi's reviews, but here it is anyway: - Quote :
- Unfortunately, once they tried to take inspiration from other bands, they mimicked them so well that they lost their sense of identity in the process. "Doing Time" came straight out of the Guns N' Roses songbook, "This Means War" is a direct rip of Metallica's "Sad But True," and "Crimson Day" could be any number of '80s hair metal power ballads.

| All those comparisons are pretty accurate. That riff in This Means War Other than the verse) still sounds nothing like Sad But True but the song in general vibe wise does def have a Sad But True sound. Which isn't a bad thing cuz that song | |

I laughed as well but being that it came from Robb Flynn, it only lasted about negative seconds. As much as I love Machine Head if anyone follows trends, he would be the most guilty.

If you're referring to The Burning Red and Supercharger, Flynn admitted long ago that those albums were, under pressure from the label, their attempt to go mainstream.

Vektor has to be hands down the best band to have debuted this half decade.
Im sure that every band in your cd collection was liked (or possibly still is liked) by teenagers at one time or another (yes, even any classical cd's you may have).

And those were his only two misdemeanors, about common with most metal bands. He also made a fascinating recovery from that. I certainly wouldn't call Machine Head trendsetters. In fact, Flynn was kind of a game changer for the metal scene. Avenged and Machine Head are two entirely different bands. Avenged has always been hyper-commercial, while Machine Head made that mistake twice and otherwise churn out some pretty original (and angry) music without much of a marketing militia pulling it along.

I've heard this before and I totally disagree. The black album was trend setting. Load and Reload, while definitely more mainstream accessible, sounded nothing like anything else popular at the time. Hell, they still have a pretty unique sound. St. Anger, as shitty as it is, doesn't sound like anything else. Thank, God. So that leaves Death Magnetic. I guess one could argue they followed the whole retro metal trend, but...I don't know, seems kinda silly to say a band was following a trend when they pretty much created it 30 years ago.

Crazy talk. Supercharger has some terrible songs, man. And outside of the terrible songs, there are a number of seriously mediocre songs. No way that album is even close to being as good as the following three albums. And I hereby declare this a fact.

I totally agree with this sentiment. I had an employee who, loved SOAD and hated Metallica so I played him St. Anger at work. He loved and quickly acquired a free copy of the (then) new Metallica album.

| On the subject of Avenged Sevenfold, I have not bought any of the albums since City of Evil. I have have attempted to listen to them as one of my brothers is a huge fan. They didn't grab me at all. That is not to say that they are a bad band, just pretty mediocre really. I agree with the comments that they trend hop way to much and are trying a little to hard to be a "relevant" metal band, and in so doing they have lost my respect. Bands absolutely change over time, but not that drastically, unless you are Kid Rock and trying to do it intentionally. | |
