Lari,
If you're looking for a place to start with Avenged Sevenfold I'd suggest the album "City Of Evil". Prior to that they did a lot of "screamo" vocals which I don't like but the lead singer blew out his vocal cords and actually had to start singing. After "City" they started going in a more "mainstream metal" direction, I don't have the ardent hate others here seem to have toward the latest output from the band but it's also nothing I feel compelled to buy either.
I think Shadows said "he wanted to sing" and it had nothing to do with blowing out his vocal cords... That was just a rumor that was going around bcuz of the change in vocal style. I wouldnt want to scream either if I sounded that bad hahah!!!!

I've always had this problem with ppl bashing bands bcuz they don't like their music or something the guys say. If you don't like it and want to say things like "these guys just do nothing for me" or "I prefer other types of music", that's fine. When ppl start calling bands names (which is like bullying) I will be right there to stick up for the band or artist bcuz I hate seeing that. I don't even have to like the band, I have a lot more respect for music than bashing bands bcuz I don't like them..

i.e. screaming was no longer being as widely accepted by the mainstream. Retro metal was in!

The album isn't great but when someone feels the need to say the same thing over and over again and start tossing names out about the band, bcuz someone has a difference of opinion, i'll be right there to laugh at them, so thank you for the chuckle.
I mean scroll up, post after post is you making fun of something you claim to not like, yet you keep posting their music? I get it
Dude, I don't go around talking trash about bands just to talk trash. I get no pleasure from that. I like to talk about bands I dig. But this has nothing to do with not liking their music. It's about their lack of musical integrity. You say you care about the music, yet you have no problem with a band blatantly ripping off other bands? Come on. Caring about music means you call out the bullshit.
If I read a story about a clown named Peniswarts that lives in the sewer and preys on young children, written by some young author, I'd call bullshit. Why? Because he ripped off Stephen King.
Avenged Sevenfold is the Peniswarts of the "metal" world.

Is this like the new Nickelback? So popular it's become fashionable to hate them?
I am going to come in and defend this band I don't even know. I heard one song (and I may have seen them live, I've gone to too many concerts and festivals I have to check my old ticket stubs to be sure)
Copying Metallica's Black Album is bad? I agree it's not the best album to copy, it's a little lifeless and plodding, but it was pretty popular and it's not like there's too many bands out there sounding like it nowadays. Do they sound anything like Am I Blood? That band turned it into an art form, and I actually like their Truth Inside the Dying Sun album:
Anyway, what's this about being unique? Everything's been done before anyway. Metallica's Black Album wears out fast though. So is that the problem? No longevity? I don't think so. I think people are just jealous. People who don't even like the genre. "This band is too popular, I now must let everyone know I am an individual and I do not like them" /fat comic book guy voice. Let bands do what they want. If you like it, good for you. If you don't, well it's still fine.
I think I heard a song of theirs on the radio the other day (I forgot to take one of my CDs with me) and it didn't sound half bad. Certainly not something I would buy, but still better than the other 6 or 7 other songs I ended up hearing on that commercial radio station while driving to and back from work. And I think the same applies to Nickleback. I wouldn't buy their records, but if I had to, I'd rather listen to them than Miley Cyrus or Lady Gogo or One Dimension or what are the other acts out there now. Not that I have anything against those particular artists either
I don't even know Avenged Sevenfold. I always get them confused with Killswitch Engaged anyway, because they get mentioned together a lot. I remember I have seen one of the bands live, but I couldn't tell which. So it's kind of fused into one in my head. Killswitch Sevenfold.
There's also music fans who would love an album if it was only recorded by some other band. I sometimes fall into this category. "This album is okay, kind of 'meh', real big pop melodies, I can't really get into it"... but if that exact same album was recorded by one of my favourite bands, with those exact same catchy songs, I'd be all over it.
But there must be something about this band that can conjure up that kind of passion. Seven pages already. Really? THAT makes me curious. I usually like bands that the "cool music critics" hate with a passion. I need to check this band out.
But sounding like a band and blatantly copying their songs are two vastly different things. The video above might have a strong Metallica influence and sound, but that song doesn't sound like any Metallica song I've heard. Unlike this one:
A total rip-off. Sad but true.
ZING!

Dudes, I hate to admit it but the Hail to the King song is kind of growing on me. Maybe because I dig the Black Album so much?
But my CD player in my car is broken so right now I flip around radio stations. The modern rock station plays this song regularly, and I'm starting to be okay with it when it comes on.
Weird.

Funny thing is , I didn't catch the Metallica connection on This Means War until it was brought up here. Don't know how I missed it because it's so blatant. Sometimes these things just go over my head, I guess.

Who cares if some of the songs sounds like METALLICA. If the songs are good, they are good. The most important thing is that HAIL TO THE KING has no modern or alternative sounding songs on it, thats why i love it.

So it appears that as long as the band is performing in a "classic metal" style then it's perfectly okay to blatantly rip-off other bands.
This thread provides great comedy.

Well, yeah. If they were ripping off Nickelback, who would listen?
And I do kinda hate myself for enjoying it, even to a small extent. Not that I have any plans to buy it and thus support the ripping off.

See I want to join in and say that ripping off other bands is unforgivable and any band doing it should be boiled in custard etc..... mostly because I hate this boring bunch of poseurs.
However, my mind always keeps coming back to this song.
Hmm, that intro sounds familiar!
So that's my position. Blatant plagiarism is wrong!! Unless it's Voivod!

Of course, if they rip off something i like, and they still write good songs its fine to me. If they rip off alternative bands i would not care about them.

Would love to hear somebody ripping off bands I love, since I'm not satisfied enough with a single demo tape from 1990 and oop EP. And why do everyone even have a problem with A7X as long as there are dozens of AC/DC COMPLETE CLONE bands?

Bcuz they are popular.. Every album I put in I hear rip offs of some sort. I get what Ken is saying but if we want to get picky here, the songs, although they sound like these others are played NOTHING like the ones they "ripped" off. This Means War has a verse similar to SBT but the intro and every thing else is wayyyy different so there is def no ripping off there...
Having a studio and overall sound is completely different than note for note rip offs..
Im done with this subject bcuz it seems that it is ok for other bands to strive off of old school sounds but when a band becomes mainstream it's wrong.

It's absolutely absurd, isn't it?
How about this: Check out this kick-ass cover art for Rocka Rollas Metal Strikes Back.
It was done by Alan Lathwell, album released by our buddy Stormspell. Now tell me, would it be okay if another person came along, copied it, claimed it as his own, sold prints, put it in an artist showcase? Would that be okay? Because it happened.
This is a cheap, child-like knockoff, just like the latest Avenged Sevenfold album. And this kind of nonsense is not okay. =)

As a metal head I feel the shame of liking these guys but I got my copy from the library so at least I did not financially contributed to their "scam" !

Hey, no one is saying you can't like it. Enjoy it. Go ahead, no problem. Just don't defend it, don't make excuses for what it is. It's an album that intentionally steals from other well-known songs in an attempt to cash in on those songs' popularity.
