Jeff Hanneman R.I.P. (1964-2013)

I was just watching Slayer's set from the Big Four concert the other day - and I thought, wonder when Jeff will be able to get back into the fold. So tragic. Never realized the true extent of his contributions until SD's post. Makes it even more sad. One thing that surprised me was how young he was. Way too soon. RIP

Too bad. He was quite the talent and will be greatly missed.

I was totally in shock when I heard this news yesterday. And today I still can't believe it. R.I.P. Jeff

Note how he belittles Jeff's contributions to the band. I have no doubt King will continue with Slayer as planned.

Nevermind. I didn't back up far enough in the thread.

I always hesitated about getting into slayer, mainly because of their satanic image.

Then i purchased seasons ibn the abyss, reign in blood and south of heaven, and was blown away by the quality of their music.

Said news about jeff passing away.

I guess this necrotising fasciitis had some devastating effect on him.

He will live in this music.

Is it just me or does some of the stuff fans are posting smack of extremely poor taste? I've seen people posting, "See You In Hell Jeff" or "He's South of Heaven now!" Really? We hope he was burning in hell?

I've gone out-of-my-way to avoid reading any comments sections on any postings about his passing. I knew nothing good would come from it.

It gets better...the WBC has threatened to picket the funeral, so now it's open season on all Christians in a lot of threads. Apparently only Slayer fans are allowed to tell the poor guy to go to hell.

I come from a big Christian background so my Facebook friends list is 90% protestant/pentacostal. It took some balls to post an RIP on my wall that day but surprisingly no one even commented on it. Considering a lot of older adults starting to morph into active FB users, you'd think a bunch of the prudish church moms I grew up with would be down my throat.

Sadly, I'm seeing this elsewhere, akin to what S.D. is talking about. This has to stop. What these people are attempting to do is steal attention by making it all about their faith. Jeff was a good man, married to his wife for, what, 20 years I think, was a great musician, a historian, and above all he had been suffering something awful for the past few years. He and his family and even his bandmates do not deserve these diatribes and protestant sentiments.

I do have to say I would like to also see a little bit of common sense exercised when slews of bands - and fans especially - are constantly calling for Christians to be fed to the lions, wiped from the earth, going to 'our hell' and so on and so forth and so forth over years and years and years..... but it never is.


There is NOTHING AT ALL ok about any of these kinds of comments regarding Jeff, but I do find some of this irony sadly amusing and it should be a wake up call for people to attempt to be decent to each other in general...

If the WBC does protest the funeral, then I wouldn't be surprised if people started beating the crap out of them, that would be something.

these "churches" are more sects than actual churches. bunch of liars. christianity is about love and forgiveness. at least according to what i know as a catholic.

Problem is, they're armed with a militia of lawyers ready for this sort of thing. They're known for being virtually untouchable.

That is in poor taste as well. Who is anyone to judge but God alone? Those people weren't there and don't know him personally, and even if they were there and did know him, they still aren't God. How dare anyone make that classless judgement on another human being! I remember the same thing being said of Ronnie James Dio upon his passing and it was just as baseless and wrong.

However, with Dio I don't remember fans saying things like "See you south of heaven".

Those WBC are a cult and a joke. They are not followers of Christ. They are not Christians. They are followers of their own bizarre doctrines and ill-logic. They picket everything. They picket the funerals of soldiers, celebrities, Christian pastors, even small children who have passed away from horrific tragedies. Instead of offering to help these people in their time of need and showing them what true Christian love is, they picket and show the world what a bunch of nutcases they are.

As someone who doesn't believe in a hell, comments like that sound very tongue in cheek to me. Seeing as how somewhat satanic Slayers lyrics were, especially in the early days.
