I loved the new Aerosmith expect for two out of the four (!!!!!!!!!) ballads on the disc.
I liked it pretty much from day one as well (except for the ballads). However, it didn't lose anything after being shelved for awhile, which some new albums tend to do.

I actually liked the ballads, they sound better when you listen to them individually.

Interesting comments from Brad Whitford on the last album...
Quote :
Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford has stated that the band “missed the mark” with last year’s album Music From Another Dimension.
At time of release it was hailed as a landmark achievement in the band’s history. It was their first since their near-split in 2009 after relationships broke down between frontman Steven Tyler and his colleagues. It was also the first time in years that the band hadn’t used outside songwriters.
A year after its release and with lower-than-anticipated sales, Whitford tells VH1 (via Blabbermouth): “We have a lot of issues with the last record now.
“We feel like we missed the mark a little bit. I’m not quite sure what we would have done differently, but we feel like we should have done something.”
He says Aerosmith had “a good time” recording their fifteenth studio album but continues: “I don’t know if the material really translated.
“Maybe we’re a little bit stuck in the way we do things; we kind of did it old-school and thought we were going in the right direction. But I don’t know.”
Whitford isn’t sure how the experience might shape their future album sessions. “We still have a lot of creative juices flowing,” he says. “Maybe we’ll experiment a bit more in the writing process. Maybe we need to bring in some more contemporary people to work with, and maybe take a few twists and turns. I don’t know.”
"Maybe we’re a little bit stuck in the way we do things".
I'll say. They need to ditch their 90's-write-for-radio-hits format and go back to just the 5 of them writing for themselves and stop worring about a hit. Lose the ballads and outside writers. Follow KISS' example and just write a good rock record. Times have changed and while they were lucky to get a second chance in the 80's, they need to move on and give the fans what they want.

Pulled out Toys in the Attic and Get Your Wings the other day; the Aerosmith I know and love is the band with little commercial appeal. While Dimension had some good songs on it, it's not the kind of thing I wanted to revisit. It had that sterile sheen applied to it that just turns me off, no matter how well the songs are written. I miss the risk-taking, balls-out, no-frills Aerosmith that worshiped at the altar of the Stones.

100% agreed. But I don't think well see that happening again. With Tyler doing a solo album that I'm sure will suck the big one I think he's the one writing all this commercial bull crap & that will get worse with his solo album.

Bingo.... That sounded like the original plan...but outside songwriters got sucked in, multiple ballads written...... waiting for the next interview where it's blamed on Steven Tyler

I've felt for a very long time (since about Pump) that Aerosmith has been a very weak band with bland songs. Ballads aside (and I don't mind a good ballad), the "rocking" tunes were lackluster. I've just given up on these guys.

I'd like to think they could still wow us all with another record like Rocks (though doubtfully quite THAT good). But they have to forget about commercial appeal (not that it wouldn't have any, but they shouldn't write for that).

I still think Music From Another Dimension is a decent record. But it could have been soooo much more under the right circumstances.
Eh, maybe they'll learn from this. Or not.

I have to agree with Metalguy, ditch the outside writers, forget about the ballads, and the hell with radio play, just do what you want to do, hell you will probably be rewarded with more sales.

I haven't listened to anything Aero-wise since "Pump" for good reason. They are so outta touch with their fan base it's beyond hope. God bless 'em but I feel they're all out of juice. I'll be the first one to admit I'm wrong when that day comes but............

"Aerosmith is back in the studio with producer and engineer will.i.am and featuring duets with Drake, Demi Lovato, and the cast of Glee...music video for lead single will be shot by director Zack Snyder..."
What they need to do is get a f*cking clue.

pretty much the same way I surmise thangs too
shame that a major band of my youth is still kickin after all these years and somewhat relevant, but not to me.

Have any of you guys seriously listened to Nine Lives? I can't see how anyone who is an Aerosmith fan could think that it's a "weak album".
And for a fun drinking song...
And thought it's definitely more bluesy pop, I love this song! Of course I like most of the songs that Aerosmith has written with songwriter Richie Supa. (Chip Away At the Stone, Lightning Strikes, Amazing)

I find them to be rather average at best, they've got a few good songs but overall I think they're a rather overrated band.

That was me until I picked up a copy of Rocks. That album made me an Aerosmith fan.

Considering their best material was released over a decade before you were born I don't find that surprising.

I have no problem with Aerosmith post 70's. I admit I haven't heard the last couple albums save for a song or two. I don't mind them using outside writers to help kick start the grove as long as they keep it Aerosmith. They are good in concert.

Honkin on Bobo I dont consider an "Aerosmith Album" It was a blues album just saying.....
I still havent heard the newest from them, money's been super super tight with planning a wedding, and vacation and all.....
I do have to say that their 70s stuff is the best. I have Nine Lives and other than a few songs I havent given it a listen yet... Probably will when Im on an aerosmith kick again right now Pink Floyd is where im at...
My fav Aerosmith song is still "Kings & Queens" and mostly when Im putting Aerosmith in the CD player its their GH the one you can get for a few bucks... hehe
