With the young'ins this evening:
"Furry Vengeance" (2010)
Developers are bulldozing a forest to make a new suburban subdivision, and the guy in charge encounters fierce resistance from some very determined raccoons, skunks, and bears in this cheap looking but occasionally funny kiddie comedy.
I almost felt sorry for Brendan Fraser while watching this. Remember when he was a buff, studly action hero type with his own franchise ("The Mummy")? Now he's middle-aged, out of shape and playing second banana to a bunch of CGI critters n a low budget kids' movie. If this is the best he can do nowadays, he needs a new agent.

The movie should get props for casting Ken Jeong though, he makes any film better.

"The Humanoid" (1979)
In this cheese-tastic Italian "Star Wars" wanna be, galactic bad guys turn a gentle star pilot (Richard Kiel, aka "Jaws" of James Bond fame) into a hulking mutant killing machine, planning to make him the first in a massive army of such "Humanoids." Unfortunately his memory slowly returns and he eventually starts fighting for the "good" guys instead.
The flick rips off "Star Wars" to an astounding degree - including its desert planet setting, a villain who looks so much like Darth Vader that it's damn near copyright infringement, a kid with mystical powers, and a cute robot. Oh, and lots of guys running around with laser guns going PEW PEW PEW of course. Hell, the director (Aldo Lado) is even credited as "George Lewis," presumably because it sounds kinda like "George Lucas."
This laughable craptacular was exactly what I needed as an antidote to a particularly sh*tty day. As Italian "Star Wars" ripoffs go, this makes Luigi Cozzi's "Star Crash" look like "2001: A Space Odyssey."
The whole movie is on YouTube if you want to subject yourself to it. Make sure you have at least a 12 pack of beer handy before you hit "play," cuz you're gonna need 'em!

The Guest (2014)
Fun homage/satire to 1980s trash cinema. Dan Stevens is great as "The Guest", pulling a complete 180 from his role in Downton Abbey, he's a very entertaining psychopath. Props should also go to Maika Monroe (It Follows) and Lance Reddick (Fringe/The Wire). The film manages to be more intelligent than most of the films it his paying homage to, while still being enjoyable on a scoop-your-brain-out and enjoy level.

So far indie horror has been going for broke. Very cool.
Iron Man - A-. Fantastic movie, funny as hell, well mounted, and the partly-improvised delivery is splendid. Best thing about this movie is my man Jeff Bridges. He owns every minute of his role, which is very much against type. Still the greatest American actor alive imo.
Animal - B-. Surprisingly effective indie horror creature feature about a monster killing college kids in the mountains. Derivative on all levels, but modeled with the kind of energy and spunk delivered by movies like Evil Dead. Acting and characters is also above average. The creature looks fantastic, bringing to mind the creations of the late Stan Winston. A decent time waster.
The Perfect Host - B. David Hyde Pierce is back as Niles struggles with mental degradation after the loss of Fraiser and Daphne. Haha not really but as entertaining as Pierce is here, it's essentially an amped-up, maniacal version of his Fraiser counterpart, yet you won't see me complaining. Half the movie resembles the far superior Sleuth as a career criminal fresh from a heist worms his way into Pierce's luxury condo, and the two square off. Only problem is Pierce is violently nuts. Quality of script and photography is barely above made for cable status, needs more bite, and character motives are really strained here, but it never bores. Really, it's thrilling to revisit everyone's favorite Jungian after so long.

"The Confessions of Robert Crumb" - 1987 BBC documentary about the life and career of the underground comics legend. Not as in depth (or as disturbing) as Terry Zwigoff's 1994 feature length doc "Crumb," but entertaining.
Twisted Sister "Live at Reading 1982" - bonus DVD that came with the 2011 reissue of 'Under the Blade," of TS' breakthru performance at the UK festival. Total badassery!!
