Really?
Yes. Absolutely.

I think now is great! You have to dig a little but there has been some amazing albums in the last few years.
Name 'em.
What just so that you can rubbish them? No thanks, can't be bothered.
So I can point out why I disagree and the 80s had so many better releases.
I dig pretty deep in the underground and haven't found many great ones in recent years.
I enjoyed the last two HATRIOT albums but would stop short of calling them great. They're not as good as, say, EXODUS from the 80s.
I'd call the latest VOIVOD album great and I think that's about it.

If thrash is your deal then I'd probably agree (I do really, really like that Reek album)
but off the top of my head utter greatness?
Oranssi Pazuzu - Valonielu Triptykon - Melana Chasmata Alcest - souvenirs d'un autre monde (6 years old but hey!) Subrosa - More Constant than the Gods Devin Townsend Project - Addicted
and then a whole stack more that I really, really dig (that I've raved about ad nauseum on here about)
I'm not even suggesting that heavy music is in better shape now than it was in 1975 or or 1985. But it crushes 1995 0r even 2005 so I would by no means call it the worst era.
But of course this is only an opinion.

My favorite era would be the 70's and 80's, but might have more to do more with the time I period I grew up and memories I have of discovering the bands I still love til this day, then the actual quality of the music bands new music scene are creating today.

I found stuff I liked in every era, even the musically depressed 1990s.
I'm shocked that any metal fan would say the 80's was the worst era. Sure there was the overly girly stuff of the 80's, but there was a TON of great music as well. In fact, even some of the bands that looked like girls had some great music. I guess if you weren't there you can never understand it.
My favorite era is probably the 70's and early 80's. The metal that was coming out then is timeless to me and I still frequent it regularly. I mean, a song like Nobody's Fault in 1976 blew us all away! There was UFO, Sabbath, Priest, Scorpions, Ted Nugent, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rainbow, etc. These bands were the heavy bands but none of them sounded like the other. They had personality and they were not confined to having to stay in a little box. They had unique vocalists who didn't all sound the same.
Then there was the New Wave of Heavy Metal that hit in the late 70's and early 1980's! That stuff just ruled! Riot, Raven, Anvil, Venom, Tygers of Pan Tang, Twisted Sister, Diamond Head, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Exciter, Dio...the list goes on and on. Nothing seemed heavier and the scene wasn't as fragmented as it is now. Metalheads didn't argue over who was and who isn't metal, and they certainly didn't disrespect the bands who gave way to the New Wave of Heavy Metal. That doesn't even include the fact that speed and thrash metal was born in the early 80's.
Of course we all know it would only get heavier and heavier. I remember when Napalm Death's "Scum" was released. I heard it for the first time and said to my room mate at the time, "if they get any faster it's going to just be one continuous noise".

Same thing happened when my brother first got into Godflesh. I think the album is called "Streetcleaner?" He was listening to that tape on the boom box in our rec room and I thought either the batteries on the tape deck were dying or the tape was being eaten.

The 80´s for me was the best because of Thrash and also Classic Metal. The 90´s had the "dungeons and dragons" Power Metal which I like some. Thrash was basically dead. I don´t like Death or Black Metal at all. Nu Metal is NOT Metal
The 2000´s see the ressurgence of Thrash so these are the "golden" eras of Metal for me.

Who in the world would call all this "alternative nu crap" "METAL". this is everything Metal ISN´T. Grunge and Nu Metal are the extreme oposites of real metal.
