I "guess" us older listeners had time to appreciate an entire album and really get into what a band was doing or tryng to do on each release. We didn't have a 24 hour cable TV music channel or the internet to saturate our music listening sensabilities with an overdose of choices. If anyone is being honest here, myself included. Do you really give something a deep listen nowadays, when you know there is easy access to something just as good or better, merely a click of a mouse away ? I am grateful that my parents exposed me to the music of thier day, The Big Band sound of the late 30's/early 40's, then my siblings with doo wop, Motown, and the Haight/Asbury sound, as well as all the albums that got kicked down to me by them (siblings), their friends, and others around the neighborhood. When you never knew how long it was getting loaned, or if it was yours to keep forever, the way it got listened to made an appreciation of the music quite relevant. It wasn't like it is today, a thing for mass consumption.
I have to agree and disagree with some of this - I would pull MTV in the 80's/early 90's out of it. MTV (and Headbanger's ball) was a GREAT place to check out videos and THEN buy the whole album if you like the video. The crew I hung out with never bought singles - it was all about the album. If you liked a video, you usually bought the album. If we loved the album, the next one was must buy on release day. Just saw a couple of the crew from high school last week and we talked about that - we're still all album guys.
Hate to admit as such, but I can handle RATM if it comes on the radio. I wouldn't buy, but I've definitely heard worse. What I can't handle is that band being referred to as 'Rage'.
The Beatles U2 Bruce Springsteen Bob Dylan Rage Against The Machine Korn Jazz as a whole Black Metal as a whole The Who The Doors Nu Metal as a whole
RATM!!! Thank you!! Somebody please please Shoot Zach De La Rocha... preferably in the mouth!!
But why The Who? I love those guys, they had some great tunes and I love their raw sound, even more than the Kinks.
The Who were played constantly on the radio in the town where I grew up. As a result, I can't stand them.

Ok, but are we talking angry hate, or just not my cup of tea hate?

I don't think it's offense, but...confusion?
This. Definitely not offended. I guess I'd describe it as shock more than anything. At least from this forum.
There are bands I dislike too, don't get me wrong. Most people here already know who those are though. No need to beat a dead horse.

Guess my emphasis on over-saturation was missed ? How many great bands were passed by during the MTV era due to "at first glance" seemed like all the rest of the product. Not to mention, a good hard rockin band being overlooked merely because the "ballad" video didn't take off.

The older I've gotten the more I appreciate whole albums. I can't even do individual playlists on my ipod because then I'll just want to listen to the whole album. Funny thing is when I was younger and had a lot more free time for listening I was more songs oriented. Now that dedicated music time is so limited it's all about albums. Kinda the inverse of the way it should work out.
I'm liking that so many people "hate" some of these bands. Especially people who are music fans on a music forum. Personally I love most of them, but that's the beautiful thing about musical tastes is the ability to be into what you're into regardless of others. There should be no "sacred cows" in music as far as I'm concerned.

I think it's funny that many of the bands listed are not "hated" (as the thread implies) but just fall more into the "I can't get into them" category.
At least I listed bands I actually "hate" and stated why. The way others have used this thread, I could have listed Talking Heads....I don't "hate" them, but I can't get into them.

That's basically what I was getting at. Everyone has their bands that are "meh," like with me and Phil Collins, and that makes total sense. But hating Johnny Cash? I doubt that's possible.
It's possible... he's an over rated piece of shit!
Now, that's just ridiculous and disrespectful. C'mon, man. He was a pioneer. And calling him overrated is sort of weird when he has a completely unique style that was unlike anything in his time. Country music had been, well, very country until he came along with the dark side of things, dismissing sentiment and painting his western landscapes with anti-heroes, moral ambiguity, and twisted love stories. It was a heavy dose of dark realism that the post-WWII musical landscape needed at the time. He had a direct influence on all things rock and metal. Hell, he's the guy responsible for riffing in popular music. He later embraced a sort of vulnerability that made him approachable and likable. To not enjoy his music is one thing, fine. But to call him an overrated piece of shit is obviously unwarranted and unnecessary.

I totally agree. To quote your hatred, there are very few bands that upon hearing make me want to Break Stuff.
