Good stuff, but stick with it through ep3. Lots of people...including myself...weren't hooked by the pilot.

Watched Elysium at the theater the other day. I overall liked it pretty well despite the 2 hour pro obamacare message.

Prince of Persia (2010). This film asks the question; "Can we spend $200 million on a film without a single original idea in the entire movie?". The answer is yes, they could also end up losing over $100 million because it flopped.
The ONLY good thing about this film is Gemma Arterton, she was by far the best special effect.

Pirates vs Cardinals. Great job by Francisco Liriano limiting the Cards to just 2 hits in a 5-0 win. Nice also to see Garrett Jones wake up (3-4,4 RBI). Now to keep it up !

Westworld (1973)
Michael Crichton's 1973 "robots run amok" thriller is basically a direct blueprint for Jurassic Park (posh resort for the rich operated by technicians in a computer center, the robots (dinosaurs) escape control, mayhem ensues). Crichton obviously has fun with the western elements and Yul Brynner created one of the most memorable movie villains in film history.
The production elements are pretty dated and it's obvious the original budget was low. Crichton is a fantastic writer but honestly not the best director, the execution is a little clunky throughout. Still, the premise holds up and Yul Brynner is so wonderfully menacing as the gunslinger that it's quite entertaining despite the flaws.
J.J. Abrams is currently producing a pilot for a Westworld TV series for HBO.

"Firewalker" (1986)
Enjoyably cheesy comedic action flick with Chuck Norris and Louis Gossett Jr. as a pair of bumbling treasure hunters who accompany a hot babe (Melody Anderson of "Flash Gordon" fame) down to Mexico to search for a long lost stash of Indian gold. Norris and Gossett actually make a pretty good team... they deserved a better movie than this one, which is bolted together out of bits stolen from bigger budget adventures like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Romancing the Stone."

I used to have this taped from local TV onto VHS as a kid and I loved it; couldn't figure out why it was so poorly received. Going to have revisit it to find out at my more discernible age (ha-ha).

I hadn't seen this movie in dog years, and I had vague memories of it being pretty terrible, but I ended up enjoying it in a "so bad it's good" way.
It's fun to watch Norris playing against his usual in-control hero type (Gossett's character is the brains of their partnership, Norris' is the dim bulb muscle) and there are some good bits, but the whole mid section of the movie is basically a series of "filler" scenes where nothin' much happens and those slowly drag the whole thing down.

The first two episodes of Black Blood Brothers.
I generally don't like dubbed anime but the dub was actually pretty decent. As the genre has become more popular over the years you see much better dub efforts and this is one of the better efforts in this regard, (at least in the first two episodes), I've seen in a while. It's a vampire based storyline and while that's been done to death this one places it's own spin on it and is interesting enough that I'll probably watch the whole series.
The nice thing about this series and for that matter many anime series is that you're only looking at about 13 episodes so it's not like you've got to plow through 3-5+ seasons. Most of my favorite anime series as well as TV series in general fall into the 13-26 (give or take a few) episode range and don't overstay their welcome.

And I just found this tidbit. I knew there was a reason I literally groaned out loud when I found out who was pitching the first game for Pittsburgh:
Quote :
Liriano held the Cardinals to just two hits (both of them singles) and two walks while striking out six. The southpaw has now allowed just two runs in 24 innings over three starts against St. Louis this season
By the 4th inning last night I'd already started watching season 2 of Stargate SG1.

"Primal" (2011)
A group of twenty-somethings head into the Outback on a camping trip... then they must battle for survival when one of their group becomes infected with a virus that turns her into a superhuman, homicidal something-or-other. Needless to say, hilarity ensues.
This fast paced Aussie horror flick doesn't offer much that we haven't already seen in "The Descent," "The Ruins" or "Cabin Fever" but it was a gooey, nasty, violent 'n' gory good time nonetheless.

"Forced Vengeance" (1982)
Old school chop-socky cheez with Chuck Norris as the head of security at what must be the only honest casino in Hong Kong. When the local "syndicate" decides that they want a piece of their action and ultimately kill his beloved employer, The Mighty Chuck deals out mucho butt kicking payback.
The Hong Kong locations lend a slightly exotic feel to this otherwise pedestrian action/adventure flick with atrocious dialogue and hilariously wooden acting from everyone involved, especially Norris himself. The guy was never a great actor, of course, but he goes through the motions in this movie like a sleepwalker (unless he's roundhouse kicking someone in the face).
Definitely not one Chuck's better flicks...

The Amazing Spider Man.... Finally got around to checking this out after being turned off by the crappy 3rd movie and this quick reboot........I think this is my favorite Spider-Man film. The Lizard didn't get enough development (needed more scenes like the battle between Connors' persona and the Lizard persona), but generally they packed a lot of heart into this movie, it was a pleasant surprise to watch.

Watched the Cards' bats finally wake up as they salvaged the final game with the Pirates 7-2. Back into a first place tie.

Luckily I missed that one. I had to drive out to Bedford today. I'm not sure how this thing will play out but it's been one hell of a fun central division race.
