Favorite 2013 album releases

Damn, the new Anneke van Giersbergen album Drive is catchy as hell. I know it's not metal, but since when does that matter?

It doesn't. This is just a really good year for music, regardless of genre.

I can't really make a final list until I hear the new Protest the Hero, Alcest, Haken, Kayo Dot, Gorguts and a few others. Leprous' new one will probably be up there, along with Fire! Orchestra and Laura Marling's newest ones.

So far for me this year (in no particular order):

Fates Warning - Darkness in a Different Light (I'll make myself like it that much)
James Labrie - Impermanent Resonance
Akeldama - Everything Beautiful (prog death can be that crushingly touching)

Sean Hall - Beneath the Solace
Primitaj - Fortune Favours the Brave
The Alien Narrative - s/t
Tesseract - Altered State
Sacred Mother Tongue - Out Of The Darkness
Killswitch Engage - Disarm the Descent

A7X - Hail to the King  

Giving it a listen this morning I have to say Super Collider really has started to become my favorite of the year. That or Clutch's Earth Rocker. I'm going to not listen to the samples because it's a sure buy anyway, but the new Onslaught sounds like it might be a contender too based on the praise it's getting.

This year hasn't been as great in terms of stuff I've really loved or been blown away with. But some of that might be because I felt last year was one of those rare every twenty years type things where so much good stuff came out. 2013 I'd say so far is more just a solid year with nothing being a complete disappointment yet.

I am perennially behind on "new" releases anyway, and it's been an extremely slow year for CD buying for me in general. I posted this back in May...

...and since that post, the only 2013 releases I've added are the two Queensryche albums (Tate and Todd)...so if I had to choose strictly from the piddling amount of 2013's I've purchased, I'd have to go with the ToddRyche as my favorite of the year...

Geez, collecting wise, 2013 has pretty much sucked for me!

*EDIT* The preceding post depressed me so much that I went up the road to Best Buy on my lunch break and added a new 2013 release to the pile - Stryper's Second Coming.

Most of these bands I've never heard of so I went through your list one by one tonight. Damn. All great thrash, and very original at that. But ladies and gentlemen, do we have a winner:



Lead man should rough his image up a bit; he looks like Taylor Lautner's stand-in. But seriously, this is CRAZY shit. I want this.

Oh an I have been enjoying Revocation quite a bit. It's the perfect balance between death and thrash with all the great techy going-ons to make for a very spontaneous feel. Great band.
