One of my ost recent letdowns were Kingsbane - Kingsbane / Seven Years CD. I read so much praise for this, and their prog-metal should be right up my alley. But so far this has totally failed to grab me. | Didn't like them at first listen also. But after a year or so I've tried them again and now I think they rule. This is the kind of prog I'd die for. |
Believe me, I'm not giving up on this! I've been eyeing this but now i'm not so sure.

| I pretty much liked everything that Flotsam & Jetsam put out until "unnatural selection". But i think it's more because of the bad production than the songs. | |

| Another one for me was Pantera's Great Southern Trendkill. I was disappointed in Far Beyond Driven but this one was way too extreme for my tastes. I got rid of it and Far Beyond Driven and now my Pantera consists of Cowboys and Vulgar. | |

BELLADONNA:S/T
I need to revisit this one. Bought it for dirt cheap some time back and seemed to enjoy it at the time but haven't listened since that's actually a really decent album. Spells of Fear is what causes debate. the production was so bad that the song writing never came through. I had that Belladonna s/t when it was new, then ditched it for reasons I can't remember. About a year ago, I got a new copy from someone here in trade and enjoy it quite a bit. Never heard the follow-up, but I've heard it's pretty bad. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

| Can't believe I forgot to add 'Once' by Nightwish. Mega-turd. Also, I'm the only person to probably ever say this, but I got into Fates Warning chronologically.... 'No Exit', being the high point for me....when I got 'Perfect Symmetry'....I was not floored. And I'm still very much not even though it has grown on me but there are some tracks that just do absolutely nothing for me or irritate me. Plus, one of the best songs sounds like Queensrÿche (Chasing Time), which is great except this is a FW record. Other places, the progression comes off as a little half baked and awkward, and then Ray's vocal mix is garbage on most of the thing too. Ehhh.. | |

Though I have some problems with some songs on Symmetry such as "Part of the Machine". Never liked that one.

I know I'll ruin utterly my old-school reputation, but I dig this album and find it in par with the first 3. Now Imaginarium - that's a real turd.

| oh, I think the playing is objectively very good, but the album itself is just a chore for me. It's bookended by two pairs of songs I really like, and then the 4 in the middle go absolutely nowhere with me, I feel nothing. 'At Fates Hands' especially is like...the transitioning is really half baked. I think the material is also x2 better live, at least that's the impression I get when watching the DVD that comes with the remaster. Generally, I appreciate and welcome the changes and progression they incorporated but this record is like the baby steps into something new. | |

| In all those years, quite a few, that's for sure. If I have to go back to the 90's, back when I was buying albums without listening to them first, those come to mind :
Megadeth - Youthanasia
Even though 'Countdown to Extinction' wasn't as good as 'Rust In Peace', I enjoyed it a lot. But 'Youthanasia'? I felt betrayed.
And then 'Hidden Treasures' comes out, and even though most of the songs were recorded earlier and some appeared on B-sides, soundtracks, etc., I was under the impression it was a good sign of things to come. "Breakpoint", "Go to Hell", "Angry Again" and "99 Ways To Die" were songs I liked a lot back then.
Then ... Cryptic Writings ... How bad was this? Perhaps 2 or 3 decent songs, the rest being garbage.
And finally Risk a few years later, which I bought anyway because I thought Megadeth couldn't do worse than 'Cryptic', and because I read in an interview with Mustaine that he thought the new album would be a traditional Megadeth record. Shame on me!
Sure, I could name Load & Reload too, but thanks to the video of "Until it sleeps" and the new look displayed by the guys, I didn't buy them when they came out. They're in my collection now, but only because I picked them up for like 1$ in pawn shops a few years ago.
Another huge disappointment for me was Forbidden 'Green', which I managed to import from Europe because I couldn't wait for the US release date on Pavement, which was a little after the Euro release. I must have paid over 30$ if not more to get my hands on this. I was shocked after my initial listen. "Twisted Into Form" was (and still is) my favorite metal album of all time, and even though I felt like "Distortion" was a step back for them, I still enjoyed it. But "Green"? Honestly, to this day, I still can't listen to it from start to finish.
More recently, Disillusion "Gloria" comes to mind. I thought their 2004 album on Metal Blade, "Back to Times of Splendour", was pure genius. It was original, epic & melodic, aggressive when it needed to be. But "Gloria"? Experimental progressive crap as far as I'm concerned.
And then there's The Haunted. I totally worshipped them up to rEVOLVEr. I liked the Aro-fronted albums as much as the Dolving-fronted ones. But "The Dead Eye" was a shock. The aggression just wasn't there anymore. I promised myself never to buy a CD by them again without first hearing it. A few years later, my view on "The Dead Eye" has changed to the point where I actually like it, I can also tolerate the follow-up, "Versus", but I have yet to buy "Unseen".

| Yeah, I'm with you on "Green". "Distortion" had some good tracks and playing but "Green" is one of the worst albums by a name band ever!

| A friend of my sold his 4 Styx CDs to me that he ordered from Amazon, as good as new ... "Equinox", "Grand Illusion", Pieces of 8" and "Cornerstone"... It was a blind purchase and even though I paid dirt cheap for those, It just wasn't the style of music that I'm into. Should have bought Kenny Rogers instead

| Purchased Riot - immortal soul at the tail end of last year. Total blind purchase as I've never heard anything by them before but the album was getting a lot of love on this forum so I grabbed it. Very disappointed. Boring by the numbers power/trad metal and I hate the singer.
Another recent ish purchase is apocalyptic love by slash, boring as hell and a massive disappointment as I really enjoyed the previous album.
Can't think of many other poor blind buys. I wouldn't count albums by established bands whom I already like as its not really a blind buy in my eyes. St anger for example, by far the worst album I've ever bought but despite the fact I'd not heard any tracks I love metallica's first 5 albums and when I read classic rock magazines review where they compared it to and justice for all I rushed out and picked it up. To this day I swear that reviewer was paid by metallic as it sounds nothing at all like and justice for all.

Not a bad album, but very dissapointing compared to past efforts. I think the band got too focused on the concept and didn't put as much effort into the songwriting as they should have. There were too many long songs which just dragged on and weren't nearly as good as past epic songs, there were only a few standout songs, and those were only decent compared to past efforts. Honestly, i'd much rather listen to "No Prayer For The Dying" which I always found underrated.
Most of the previous albums mentioned (I.E. St. Anger, Risk) I didn't buy, I rented them at my local library, I enjoyed most of them(even Risk to an extent) but I won't defend St. Anger at all, I couldn't possibly think of a worse album then that one if I tried(even that Thrash Queen album was tolerable by comparison)
