The Allman Brothers are awesome...ALL other southern rock bands should be banished to an island somewhere.

I love all southern rock bands.

I like the Allmans but they're a little too bluesy for me so I don't rank them with my faves of the genre.

Not a whole lot of bands that I truly "hate", however, if 99% of the pop metal/hair metal albums from the 80's were to suddenly vanish from the planet...I might sleep better at night.

From your MTV Hair Band to your bullet belted Thrash band it is all just plain awful. This stuff was probably the soundtrack to you cracking open your first beer, unclasping some chicks bra, making your first bong etc etc etc. This is all fine and dandy and nostalgia ain't such a bad thing but in the cold sober reality of 20 odd years later this stuff plain sucks from the production, posing, image, sound etc. Things only started getting interesting in the late 80's with Rick Rubin's stable of retro bands and the weird metallic hybrids coming from Seattle, Houston, Los Angeles etc which would lead onto Hard Rock/Metal's most intense creative point (First half of the 90's).

Too me the 80's in terms of Hard Rock/Metal was the sh*tty era in between the 70's and early 90's.

Maybe a tad too over-reaching in scope, but you do make some valid points. The 80's heavy metal scene has been placed on a pretty tall pedestal by most of "my generation", like it's some touchstone of greatness that can't be repeated...

I think I could narrow down the 80's albums I really need to own to less than 20 without a problem....and most of those would be Trouble, Celtic Frost, King's X, Motorhead, Slayer and Voivod albums.

I see Rattpoison's point but I feel that early part of the 80's released some classic metal albums:

Saxon-Wheels of Steel
Iron Maiden-s/t
Motorhead-Ace of Spades
AC/DC-Back In Black and many more.

the pop metal scene while not very innovative IMO produce some good albums for that time period:


Motley Crue-Shout At the Devil
Ratt-Out of the Cellar
Dokken-Tooth and Nail

Granted they may have not aged well but I would not throw the whole scene down the can.

Of course none of this bands could touch the greatness of Alter Bridge.

After reading thru this thread I have deceided Metal Rob is alright Alter Bridge are the greatest band ever and every band that you love SUCKS!!!!!! I mean SUCKS!!!!!!!!! Compared to the mighty, majestic, spectular, Alter Bridge.

The Beatles, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, utter horse poop compared to Alter Bridge, the only thing better than Alter Bridge is if Alter Bridge made a heavy metal concept album of West Side Story with Adam 'I'm So Pretty' Lambert reprising the role originally played by Natalie Wood.
