As lame as it might be, I'll probably pick it up too. I'm a sucker for cover albums.

What album is that RP?
The last LA Guns cover album I bought was Tales From The Strip and I thought it sucked.

Tales From The Strip was a regular album, no covers. The above one is called Rips The Covers Off......their only covers album at the moment.

They also put out an ep called Cuts. Only 5 songs I think, 3 of which were cover tunes and one old tune that was re-recorded.

I never heard the Shrinking Violet album. Is it any good? Who is in the line-up for this one, specifically vocals?
I'm only interested in the Phil Lewis version of the band. The tracks I've heard with Tracii and different singers didn't do anything for me. That's when I lost interest in the band.

So apparently this one has Jizzy Pearl of Love/Hate on vocals. I like him decent enough, but how does he sound on an LA Guns album?

Covered in Guns gets 2 out of 5 according to AMG:
Quote :
2010’s Covered in Guns collects 13 cover tunes from the veteran Sunset Strip metal outfit, almost all of which are carbon copies of the of the originals -- the only difference between the L.A. Guns version of "Don’t Fear the Reaper" and the Blue Öyster Cult version (arrangement-wise) lies in how much lower in the mix the cowbell sits. Vocalist Phil Lewis (founder Tracii Guns currently leads another version of the band) is more than capable of delivering the goods on glam/classic rock standards from KISS and Def Leppard, and the band does a nice job replicating all of the familiar parts, but the whole affair feels like a weekend jam session that should have been relegated to each member’s personal collection.

Covered In Guns gets ripped by sleazeroxx. I've never read such a negative review from them before.
Quote :
This is bad...very, very, very bad. As if warring factions resulting in two bands using the L.A. Guns moniker isn't enough, Covered In Guns just drags the once highly regarded name deeper into the mud. Unlike 2004's Rip The Covers Off in which the band put their own stamp on the covers, this new CD offers absolutely nothing to a handful of radio staples. Covers albums are usually hit and miss to begin with, but when you don't add anything different to the original recordings what is the point? Listening to Covered In Guns is not only painful but halfway through I got so pissed off I wanted to reach through the stereo, grab the guitar, and club each band member over the head while screaming, 'WTF where you thinking???' That's how bad this CD is... it's not only a joke, but a complete slap in the face of fans who have loyally followed L.A. Guns through the years. Is there anyone in the entire world that was salivating at the thought of L.A. Guns resurrecting April Wine, or worse yet Matthew Wilder? I doubt it. Choosing a bunch of songs that you can hear on the radio daily makes this a completely useless release, even more so when you figure that L.A. Guns adds absolutely nothing to them. Buckcherry's "Crazy Bitch" was released just over three years ago! Who in their right mind would decide we need another version of it already? Another problem with Covered In Guns is the song selection. By bouncing from rock to grunge to pop it flows like a creek blocked off by a beaver dam. And to throw salt in the wound L.A. Guns end this abortion with a Christmas song! That's right, a CD released in February ends on a festive note for those of you looking to get a jump on your holiday shopping... what a joke. Covered In Guns is absolute smurf poo and without a doubt the low point in L.A. Guns' long and storied career. It makes me sick that I actually wasted money purchasing this crap while everyone else involved, from the band themselves right down to the record label, should be embarrassed and ashamed. The only pleasure I'm going to get out of this album is taking it out of the CD player and snapping it in half!

Wow, that's pretty harsh coming from Sleazeroxx. They're usually pretty forgiving for hair/glam bands that have been around and paid their dues.
This reminds me of that Poison cover album that came out a few years ago. It just sounded like a band going through the motions, recording some covers cause it was the thing to do. And because it came out around the same time as Tesla's Real to Reel, it just made Poison's sound that much worse in comparrison.

Oookay... Two negative reviews. Think I'll skip this one. Samples at All Music don't even sound all that great anyway. If Tracii wants to put this name thing "behind them", why doesn't he just change his band's name?

L.A. GUNS - featuring Phil Lewis, Steve Riley, Stacey Blades and Scotty Griffin - recently announced the signing of their new record deal with Cleopatra Records.
The band started tracking in early February with legendary producer, and old friend, Andy Johns (LED ZEPPELIN, ROLLING STONES, CINDERELLA,VAN HALEN and CHICKENFOOT, as well as the last three L.A. Guns albums).
An update reads: "The album's all recorded and we start mixing on Monday. It sounds amazing 15 new original songs and one in Spanish. Your gonna love it."
A CD and vinyl release, as well as bonus tracks available only on iTunes, is set for early summer. A nine-month world tour following the release is also currently being put together.
Singer Phil Lewis is said to be thrilled to get back in the studio and finally get a chance to record once again with Andy.
"We've been waiting a long time to get back in and record. Our last album, Tales From The Strip, was incredibly well-received and we're looking forward to putting out something even better! With today's uncertain musical landscape it's great to have a label like Cleopatra Records behind us. We've been friends with Brian Perera (Cleopatra Records owner and founder) for a long time, and are really looking forward to working together on this and many more projects with him in the future."
Should be good. Waking the Dead was great and Tales from the Strip was good. About time we got some new music. You'd think with TWO L.A. Guns we wouldn't have had to wait so long!

I picked this one. It's not nearly as bad as that review makes it out to be. Yes, they've gone to the covers well too much already and yes, they're pretty much straight-on covers. Nothing mind blowing.
I don't see pulling this album out too much for repeated listens by itself, but after I rip it to the computer and mix it in with an LA Guns playlist, I think the songs will work well in that regard.

New LA Guns album on the way...
Quote :
As it nears the end of a successful tour in support of "The Missing Peace" — the first L.A. GUNS album since 2002's "Waking The Dead" to feature founding guitarist Tracii Guns and vocalist Phil Lewis — the group has announced that it has finished recording a follow-up effort, apparently titled "The Devil You Know", to be released in 2019 via Frontiers Music Srl.
According to a December 22 Instagram post by Guns, the new album was completed earlier this week. "It's finished. It's pissed off. It's nasty and pure L.A. GUNS," he wrote. Those comments echo what Lewis recently told Midlands Metalheads Radio, to whom he described the new album as "like [BLACK] SABBATH, but blacker."
Ronnie James Dio is spinning in his grave over that title.
