I've had Shadow's Fall - War Within for a good long time and just can't vibe with the thing. No taste really for the Nu-Metal/Metalcore thing. I tried, but I guess that I'm pretty much done trying at this point. I'll have to concede that I'm just a traditional Thrash, Doom and Post-Rock sorta fella.
Not much taste for the new school, apart from things like Mastodon and Lamb. But, then again, that's not altogether true, because the Post-Rock groups are about as 'new' and as 'innovative' as the stuff comes. Love stuff like Pelican, Red Sparowes, Agalloch, Baroness, etc. But, find Shadow's Fall, Slipknot , Sevendust and the like, mucho distasteful. I don't even know all their names. I never listen to the stuff much more than just a few bars to ever commit the bands' names to memory.
The Nu-Metal bands, or at least what I'm referring to as Nu-M, are indeed heavy on the melodic hooks, but I feel that it's way too far-leaning towards Pop music. The music will shift from a really heavy part to a chorus which isn't far removed from what can be found on an Emo or Poppy Post-Grunge recording. You can tell the 'real' stuff from the pop 'imitators' almost instantly. Upon urging by a friend who produces music for other bands, I tried giving some attention to that band, Protest The Hero, and also Five Finger Death Punch. Still, way too Pop-oreinted for me.
I say that if you like Lamb Of God, you shouldn't be leaning more towards Nu-Metal stuff after you make it through the latest LoG outing, instead, you should be looking towards stuff more like the latest Exodus, Testament, Candlemass, Death Angel, etc. Much better music, IMO.
