I totally agree with Sax. I'm what I call a meataterian for most of the year, but during Lent, I go vegan for 40 days. I have to to tell you that not eating any meat products or anything made from animals (cheese, milk, eggs, etc.) for 40 days can really challenge you and teach you a lot about yourself. It also shows how little we really need to eat to live on. And, you feel a whole lot better by not putting in so much crap we put in on a daily basis, plus a clarity of mind.

So the next time any co-worker becomes a pain in the ass when it comes to food, just walk in their shoes.

But somehow you always return to the meat.

I don't care what he or anyone else eats. That's none of my business and more hamburgers for me.

The problem that I have with the vegetarians that I deal with on a personal basis is their insistance on trying to push their "beliefs", if you will, on to me and everyone else in the office. It's like the former alcoholic that has to keep reminding you that drinking is wrong because they don't drink anymore. I'd feel the same way about someone trying to shove their religious beliefs down my throat as well. Do whatever makes you happy, I don't care. But don't preach to me that what I'm doing is wrong. I didn't ask for your help. Piss off. (Not you, Sax. I'm talking in general here).

As for the Jewish guy, he's cool about it mostly, but he still has to make a big deal that meat & dairy don't touch on the same plate and gets the waiters to make sure of it. While that doesn't effect me directly, I can't help but think we're all getting loogies hocked in our food.

Prisoners can eat gruel for all I care.

Totally. I was just expressing thoughts. And I am trying not to come off as holier than thou. Because I have damaged my body pretty much more than anyone I know. I quite honestly wish I could live healthier, but, realistically, after 40 years of eating crap and self abuse, I don't see it happening.

Absolutely agree with this, and would apply it to any and all situations in life. At the same time, I believe everyone has the right to stand up for their beliefs when challenged, even slightly. As long as it is clear that that person is declaring his/her beliefs their own and buffering themselves in each situation. Everyone here knows I am a recovering alcoholic, and have declared that booze is wrong for me. But I have never once ever told any member that booze is bad for them. I think that is why it is good that we don't really have any kind of religious or political debate room here. That is probably the biggest reason this board is still the coolest around after 2 full years!

This is why I never complain about my meals, I sure don't want any loogies in my chow.

As for Ira Black, I got the chance to talk to him a couple times and he was very cool to me and my wife, he was friendly and approachable. I hope that he gets out of jail and back on stage soon.

Laughing very hard I don't think I can ever commit myself fully to a vegan (or vegetarian) diet. 40 days is good enough for me.

I don't wanna walk in their shoes. Calling up PETA to get involved. Sheesh. Biggest bunch of wackos on the planet. This guy is just being a crybaby because he isn't getting his way. He should have paid the fine or should have stayed within the boundaries of the law. What about personal responsibility? Then he could be Vegan all he wants until his heart's content. As far as I'm concerned he doesn't deserve special treatment.

Certainly I can't argue with the fact that fruits and vegetables are not only healthier, but are also a cheaper way of eating. I can't imagined ever cutting meat out of my diet, but I wish I was eating a little better these days. I don't look unhealthy, but I certainly feel unhealthier, and with every year one gets older, it's harder to stay on top of one's game.

With that being said, I can state that a vegan lifestyle isn't for everyone. I have a step-brother who has lived this type of lifestyle for the better part of 12 years. He became one shortly before his senior year in high school, and stupidly thought that his Mother should adopt the same lifestyle change, and cater towards his wants and needs. Because she loved her son, she did what she could, but of course it was his own responsibility to prepare his foods. Unfortunately it didn't stop there though. It then became what amounted to a constant criticism of the food that they continued to eat, which was totally out of line. I met him for the first time, which was right after he graduated from high school. What I witnessed was someone who looked: emaciated. There's no getting around it; he looked unhealthy.

Truth be told, a vegan lifestyle might work for some, but it's not for everyone. Certain people bodies are going to crave certain vitamins more than others. Many vegans will take supplements for this issue, but for some it simply isn't enough. So, when a vegan states that their lifestyle is a much healthier way, it's pure hogwash. It might be for some, but for many this just isn't the case. Heart disease and cancer strikes those who live the lifestyle of a vegan or that of a vegetarian. Hell, Linda McCartney was a vegetarian for a good part of her life, and she died of cancer. One's diet is certainly a good preventative for many diseases, but if you're "At-risk", you're "At-Risk". There's no way of getting around that. One's genetic compound seems to be half of life's battle. If you have heart disease in your family, or a history of cancer, then I don't care if you run, lift weights, eat great, etc...

As for the guitarist for Lizzy Borden, I don't see what the big deal is regarding taking care of the guy. He's obviously dedicated to this lifestyle, so do the right thing. I just hope the guy isn't being fined for back child support, otherwise I might just change my stance on the aforementioned.

I'm reminded of a Ted Nugent reality show on VH1. There was this vegan chick that was upset at the animal killing Nugent is famous for (I don't know why she agreed to be on the show in the first place, that was the first sign she was an idiot-"Hello! Have you ever heard of Ted Nugent?). However, she refused to quit the contest (say what you will about Nugent but he handled her whining and insults real well and she lasted longer than some of the other contestants). What I saw that really made me dislike vegan attitudes was what happened when Nugent and his wife cooked the contestants a meal. Knowing her veganism, his wife made a special vegan friendly meal just for her. The vegan did nothing but complain about them serving meat and the others eating it. Nugent and his wife were trying to respect this girl's veganism and she was beeing nothing but a 1st class smurfette. Her attitude is what I see with all vegans. If you feel eating meat and using anything that comes from animals is wrong, good for you but stop trying to demonize the rest of us (that makes it very hard for us to respect your beliefs).

I remember watching this, and yes that girl sucked. She definitely feeds the stereotype regarding vegans/PETA, and all the preachiness that goes along with that movement. It very much reminds me of Scientology in that respect. Both of these institutions are constantly trying to lay down the guilt trip on everyone else who believes differently. Thank God, most people just laugh these people off. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's guilt ridden laced speeches from groups.

Funny enough, I also lived with a vegan when I was in college. I used to go to Indiana University, and I lived with two girls (people used to call me Jack Tripper). My roommate Tiffany was pretty easy going, much more so than my future step-brother (who everyone wanted to strangle at times). I ate whatever I wanted in front of her, and wore my leather jacket around her also. She was pretty cool in that respect. I do remember coming home one week from college, and turning on the local news. One of the headlines that night was "Animal activists chained themselves up to circus cages" in Bloomington. Sure enough, there was my roommate handcuffed to the bars of one of the cages live on CBS channel 8 where the animals were either in/or about to be lead into. Kids were crying in the audience, and it was a big mess. I can't remember how long she had to stay in jail? Though I don't think she missed any school.

Yup! He's in jail, so deal with it. They should do what they can with what they have. If he paid his fine he wouldn't be in the mess he's in. The story should not be about his diet but rather the fact that he is in jail for not paying a fine.

This Lizzy Borden guy isn't just a vegetarian, he's a vegan. That means he doesn't use or consume ANYTHING that came from animals...food, clothes, shoes, etc. No leather jackets or stage pants for this guy. Not very metal of him I must say.

Agreed what a big WUSS!! and very unmetal indeed something a wussy indie rocker like The artic Monkeys would do maybe he should audition for them or Kings of Leon LOL.. He should be more concerned on watching his back and preventing himself from waking up with a sore arse than his perfectionist diet.
