That's crazy! I'm seriously considering taking a trip back east the first week of August to visit the family. Might even have DeathCult tagging along with me...the King's X show on Saturday would be a great way to celebrate BOTH of our birthdays!

Huge fan of this band. I have or have had everthing except for "The Edge" Demo. The first five albums are the best albums by these guys in my opinion, though Faith, Hope, Love seems a little forced. None of the stuff they did while on Metal Blade was any good except for Please Come Home. Ogre Tones is better than XV.
Ty's Rock Garden is his best solo work since the Solar Pumpkin album.
P.S. I have seen these guys live 7 times! I has hanging out with the band the day they found out that Atlantic Records had dropped them! that was a bad day and one in which I am not sure Doug has ever been able to get over.

KX Ripped, as usual. But the highlight of the night [well, I cannot discuss the real highlight - but, musically speaking...] was the opening band - Orange Sky. I will start another thread on those guys tomorrow. But until then, check 'em out for yourself and be prepared to be blown away!!!!!:

Dam! They ( Orange Sky) sound good! But if I saw them on the cover of a cd I would think they are a reggae band.

Something about KING'S X I can't understand...
- XV is thier 14th album overall (counting the live album and the best of)...why name the album, essentially, "15"?

Oh, and KING'S X wasn't "dropped" from Atlantic...they threatened to break up if Atlantic did not release them from their contract...Atlantic obliged...

What is your source on this info? I was with them the day they found out out they were no longer on Atlantic.

An interview w/ Ty shortly after signing w/ Metal Blade.

I did the interview, actually.

Is there as much of a focus on radio being with Metal Blade, than there was with Atlantic?
There's actually more focus on radio than with Atlantic. With Atlantic there was no radio focus at all. The big radio we had in the past was not with Atlantic, it was with Megaforce Records (The band's first label for the first 3 albums). Our biggest charting songs on the radio were not with Atlantic, they were with Megaforce. Atlantic just pretty much dropped the ball completely and didn't support anything in that direction. It was just a real let down. We thought when we went to Atlantic that maybe this would help the band and it almost ended the career of the band. We literally were begging them to let us out of our contract. That's how we got dropped, by the way. The story most people don't know is that we went to them and said "Please let us go??". Because we knew that if we did one more album for Atlantic, basically we weren't gonna do another album for Atlantic. If they wouldn't let us go, we were gonna split up the band. And that was what I think the deciding factor for them was. They thought, "Well, they're gonna quit if we don't do it. So we'll let them go.". So they let us go. For some reason they liked having us on the label for the credibility side, good press and stuff, the integrity side of it as musicians. They really didn't want to let us go, for some reason. But they didn't really want to promote us, either.

Thanks Shawn. I can see that, all I can say is that Doug seemed pretty upset by the news. Only they really know. Hmm.

Well, I imagine he was. His "shot" on a major label was over...he had no idea what was going to happen next, etc. Also thinking that they may break up? I bet he was pretty upset.

In hindsight, I'm postive that leaving Atlantic was the best decision they could have made. Atlantic had quite a track record of crappy promotion and band mishandling during the 90's, at least King's X was able to move on with their careers...many other Atlantic artists from that era weren't as lucky.
I wish they could have scored a contract with somebody other than Metalblade for that period, but it served it's purpose. The last two albums are some of the most solid of their entire career, so time and patience paid off for them.
