| I don't know either... Here's my definition. 1. Usually influenced by the "Alternative Rock" movement of the early 90's. Often by Grunge but not always. 2. Often employs downtuning and technology to beef up the sound hugely. 3. No blatant virtuosity; nothing allowed that sounds like KIng Diamond, Yngwie, or Rhapsody. that's my stab at a definition. Beefed up Grunge I'd call it; although most of the stuff that (I call) Nu-metal that I like,is influenced by Soundgarden (which was pre-Nu-metal?), and pays the occasional nod to Ozzy or even Southern Rock. The Nu-Metal that I don't like sounds to me like really loud alternative pop. My friends tell me I'm wrong...that the stuff I like is just classic rock with modern influences; rather than the other way around. (Black Stone Cherry, Fireball Ministry). They tell me I need to get into Black Label Society; which I'm pretty sure isn't Nu-metal. So yes, I'm all confused here too. I'd be interested to hear other definitions. | |

| nu metal is almost always downtuned, hip-hop influenced (even if just in the commercialism), pop-py, simplistic, catchy riffs/melodies. lyrics dealing in emo, street, no solos or technicality etc.
you always seem to know when you hear it.
Soundgarden was grunge, with a more Black Sabbath influence. _________________

| Lets put it this way then...call it the Lollapalooza tour from about 1993; almost lock stock and barrel (including Faith No More, Pearl Jam, Chilli Peppers, L-7, Ministry, and Soundgarden too) only now they are using Tony Iommi's equiptment. Am I getting close? | |

| Neither of those are accurate. If it weren't 3:42am I'd explain what nu-metal was. It's pretty clear cut, I think. I'll post later today. |

| I like a few nu-metal bands. Flaw Disturbed Slipknot Dog Fashion Disco (don't know if they ENTIRELY fit the label) Most of the other nu-metal discs I own I am trying to unload on LaLa, as I just don't really care for the bands anymore. _________________ You're cancer, you can't be the answer, you're killing me

Yeah, I dig SoaD too - though I currently only have their "Aerials" single and their cover of "Snowblind" by Sabbath. I had the whole catalogue at one point, but it just didn't hold enough charm for me to keep it all. Ult played me a little Sevendust when he was here last weekend and they were ok, and I've heard a little bit of Disturbed and they were also ok (they did a neat cover of Genesis' "Land of Confusion"). I don't think I'd buy anything by them though.

| You know what; it's not much worth trying to explain what nu-metal is. When it first came out it was easy to pinpoint a nu-metal band. Bands like Spineshank, Coal Chamber, Unjust, etc. But when you really get down to it, at first the "genre" was tight, because labels were being very precise at what bands they signed and promoted, so there was a common denominator there. But now many of those bands have evolved, and newer bands labeled "nu-metal" have only slight commonalities to those early nu-metal bands. So basically what has happened is that nu-metal is essentially no more, and never was. These bands are basically alternative rock/alternative metal bands.
Take grunge for example. Was it a genre? Or was it simply a worthless tag? You've got Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Tad, Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney, Green River, Malfunkshun, L7, Babes In Toyland, Nirvane, Hole, etc.; all bands labeled grunge at one point or another. But where is the common denominator there? Seattle? Location doesn't make a genre. None of those bands sound alike, their styles are vastly different. So how is that a genre? It's not. It never was. "Grunge" was a promotional tag. Those bands are alt-rock/metal bands. Plain and simple. Now that I've thought about it, I think the same can be said about nu-metal. |

Bands like Nirvana, L7 were not Grunge. In the 80s the same thing, people were calling Warrant and Poison Heavy Metal. I think they were more hard rock. What happens is MTV a radio station, or even some guy in a suit says Slipknot is Death Metal, and when thousands or millions or watching or listening, it is accepted. Than a friend says to a friend, guess who I heard last night. A death metal band called Slipknot. I was watching a clip of Slipknot on youtube. It was from MTV. The VJ called them death metal, I was shocked. I had no idea anyone, anyone at all considered them death metal |

| If you listen to the guitar playing and drum plaiying on Slipknots Vol 3, it is actually very impressive. I am a hard impress when it comes to guitar playing. |

"meh" didn't go crazy about it, they basically added some guitar solo's on some songs.

| Here's how I would put it for myself then. I rarely listen to the Nu-metal radio station here (and stations in different towns may be playing different stuff, which may lend to the confusion): but almost all the stuff I hear on there that I decide to actually like (or buy); sounds like it has a Soundgarden influence. But I guess it is too diverse to pin down; it just happens that the stuff that gets my attention has that particular sound. Also, I would say bands like Only Living Witness were one of the obscure bands that contributed to the evolution of the niche in the modern sound that I happen to like. Or to put it even more simply: just about the only bands that the Nu-metal radio station here plays that I find interesting are ones that sound to my ears like they are influenced by Soundgarden. If I'm missing the diversity it's because I don't often find much of the other stuff they play on the station to be very interesting. | |

| Demon Hunter (Metalcore, rather than nu-metal, modern either way though...) Creed (their not even metal... aren't they post-grunge?) Slipknot Avenged Sevenfold System of a Down (I dug the last two releases) Disturbed Stone Sour Rammstein (Now, if we can call CREED metal, we can call these guys metal... not sure if their "nu" though)
I'm sure their are a few more, but thats all that comes to mind at the moment. |
