Got a great compilation from Sideshow, thanks, bro!!
Here's a short review:
1. Vomitory - F.T.A. (Germany / '91) - been bugging a friend of mine to make me a CD-R of his copy for years! So this was my first exposure to this band. Great thrash, kinda reminds me on a more aggressive and more technical version of early Xentrix.
2. Redrum - Frontline (USA / '88) - Another band I was familiar with just by the name before. Well, they do sound like your typical thrash band from the late 80s, with great catchy riffs. The only letdown was a singer, which sounds a bit odd at times, but nothing disastrous.
3. Pentagram - Mephistopheles (Turkey / '90) - Fast Euro-thrash influenced metal with a very raw production and also a big heavy metal influence in it! The vocalist sounds EXACTLY like Mille from Kreator! The main riff is absolutely brilliant!
4. Skyclad - The Sky Beneath My Feet (England / '91) - I never got into Sabbat and the only Skyclad song I've heard till this was Building a Ruin (which I thought was good, but it wasn't thrash), so this was a really nice surprise! Very "grim" thrash! I'll have to check out those Sabbat albums again ...
5. Imagika - Court of Confusion (U.S.A. / '98) - Midpaced hardcore-ish, yet melodic thrash. The screams reminds me of Raven sometimes. All in all a good song, but it doesn't keep up with the rest on this comp!
6. Eldritch - Shadow Fire (Japan / '93) - One of a bunch Japanese thrash metal bands that I've just heard of! Great guitar work here, and songs constantly borders on heavy/power metal - especially the vocalist reminds me on Silver from Muro (minus the Spanish lyrics of course).
7. Kr' Uppt - Womb of Decay (U.S.A. / '96) - very BA sounding thrash band here!! They reminded me on Heathen's Victims album at times, and the vocalist sounds like Guido did on Inferior to None album!
8. Terminator - Samota (Czech Republic / '91) - Ahh, that Slavonic accent!
Gotta love it haha. Very nice song here, with a big influence from European thrash metal scene.
9. Master - Screams of Pain (Russia / '94) - Another band I was unfamiliar with. Mosh-y thrash with a great, melodic chorus! The rest is full throttle all the way, though.
10. Cold Steel - Truth or Dare (U.S.A. / '92) - Didn't know what to expect from a band with an album called "Freakboy". Mostly mid paced thrash metal with gang vocals, kinda more serious version of Acid Reign? Cool, but nothing outstanding.
11. Stygian - Behind Death's Door (U.S.A. / '92) - The vocalist reminds me on Katon from Hirax, just that he's way, way better!
The music here is very heavy thrash (not referring to "heavy metal" here)!
12. Ratos De Porao - Counting the Dead (Brazil / '90) - The only RDP thing that I've heard till this moment was of course just Crucificados Pelo Sistema, thanks to Sepultura. Well, the song here is apparently from their thrash era and is a lot more to my liking!! A slight comparision with Vio-Lence wouldn't be wrong, I guess!
13. LawShed - Go it Blind (Japan / '91) - Another Japanese thrash band that I was unfamiliar with, and boy what a mistake this was!! This is probably my favorite track from this compilation - hyperspeed thrash metal all the way!! And gotta love the Japanese accent as well!
14. Fastkill - Kill for Pleasure (Japane / '04) - Newer band, which, as many other new thrash bands, follows the formula "harder, faster, better". So, musically more or less your normal thing, but the vocals are just insane!! Another great track!
15. Broken Bones - Killing Fields (England / '89) - Apparently more of a punk band, but they play nice, stomping mosh-y thrash here! Also, the sounds is a bit "baroque" at times!
16. United - (It's So) Hard to Breathe (Japan / '90) - Finally a Japanese thrash band from the compilation that I was familiar with! Well, this song sounds a lot more like the classic thrash metal than the S.O.D.-ish No IQ album, which is the only United album that I have! This is basically a thrash metal song done to perfection - one of the highlights here for sure!
17. Tenebra - Whatever (Germany / '94) - while the production isn't their strongest point, the music isn't bad at all! Fast song with a lot of speedy riffs, but it doesn't stand out.
18. Squealer - Liar (Germany / '95) - WOW! This was a big surprise! I am familiar with their newer material and this one sounds NOTHING like it! (Melodic?) thrash metal all over the place!
19. Sacrificial - I Fall in Temptation (Denmark / '93) - Another surprise! I have their few track 04 or 05 promo and that is something completely different! What we have here is very similar to early Invocator! Not so great as anything on Excursion Demise, though, but I really like it!
Overall, OUTSTANDING compilation!!! And plenty of new (Japanese
) bands to check out!
