Pick one album that defines "Heavy Metal"

Paranoid is a really good choice. But the S/T album is my pick.

W.A.S.P.-W.A.S.P. (1984)

I wore this album out in junior high school. For a time it was my favorite Metal record. It had all the essentials that epitomized Heavy Metal!

Pantera? I don't know that I could say that they were the embodiment of what heavy metal is. I don't know, probably just my dislike of the band overall that makes me think they for the majority of their catalog that has me thinking that way.

I like all the other picks. I thought about picking "Denim & Leather" myself.

As far as I am concerned, that is the best album by any band any era.

I love Maiden, and thought about picking Killers, that's the one that really got me started in metal actually. But I just can't pass up "Survive", one of my favorites of all time, plus I was trying not to repeat albums. Denim And Lether is a great choice as well. The only one I really disagree on is Pantera.

Yup, I agree DeathCult, there are other albums I really like too, for eg: Screaming for Vengence of Judas Priest or On Through the Night of Def Leppard or Master of Reality of Black Sabbath etc, but when I talk about the best - Piece of Mind winneth by default.

the guitar tone on that album defines metal IMO yet there is some filler on there also

I hear ya Gooch, and agree as well, but overall, for me, I am enslaved to Piece of Mind.

Other albums which I am truly addicted to are Razor's Edge and Powerage from AC/DC, Screaming for Vengence and Painkiller from Judas Priest and ofcourse, Somewhere in Time, Number of the Beast and Killers from Iron Maiden, Master of Reality from Black Sabbath and Blackout from Scorpions.

the song quest for fire, sun and steel and to tame a land are not up to the standard that you expect from iron maiden although the rest of the album compensates for it IMO

Avtually, I do think Powerslave and Piece Of Mind do have a few filler tracks between them, even though Iron Maiden is my favorite.

back in the village could be viewed as filler from powerslave IMO
