Christian Black Metal has 100 % of my approval . Regular (secularrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) Black Metal is so negative and dark and self destructive in nature than a Christian or at least positive counterpart is deeply needed for these disturbed minds ...

An in-shape Mindy Kaling does it for me...(Usually as Kelly Kapoor)...but she has to be in-shape else it all goes to hell pretty quickly with her.

Yeah, she's cute. Too bad she's not funny.

Faith No More's Angel Dust is mostly self-indulgent gibberish.

I love FNM and Angel Dust, but that's pretty accurate. They could've fine tuned it quite a bit.

I absolutely love The Real Thing, and I've even learned to appreciate Introduce Yourself over the years (even tho Chuck Mosely's "singing" on that album is the textbook definition of "acquired taste,' haha), but I recently re-acquired Angel Dust after 20+ years and I still can't get into it at all. I tried it back when it was a new release too, and it was like listening to a bunch of random bits thrown into a blender.
I was surprised to learn recently that Angel Dust was FNM's best selling album. I would've thought The Real Thing held that title.

Angel Dust was when they allowed Mike Patton to have more input to the songwriting... and of coarse he’s gonna bring his weird Mr Bungle influence.
That’s why The Real Thing is my one and only favorite FNM album. Jim Martin and Billy Gould liked metal!

Yeah, that was my thought too, he turned FNM into Mr. Bungle!

Real Thing is my fave too. Almost flawless record.
It's weird though bc Patton may have altered the band, but they definitely wouldn't have gotten to where they did without him, I don't think. They woulda been more a cult band.
He's a psychotic loon of a frontman and some bands just need those.

As would I, considering "Epic", which is by far their most well known song to the general public, is on The Real Thing.

While I am a huge die-hard Led Zeppelin fan, I am glad they disbanded after Bonham's passing.
Led Zeppelin's studio output in the 80's would have been over-produced, synth-laden garbage, just like 98% of other 70's rock bands that continued on to the new decade. As it were, they went out on top without tarnishing their legacy.

That's a great point. I have honestly never thought of that. Since Page and Plant were putting out music, albeit solo, I imagine LZ would have sounded something like The Firm mixed with Plant's Now and Zen or Fate of Nations albums. I can't see some coked out record exec trying to talk them into riding the Hair Metal wagon; or them choosing to do so on their own to try to be relevant and chase a buck.

As much as I do like Great White and Quiet Riot, what does it say about you as a band when your biggest hits are covers of someone else's songs that were already hits?

I just look at the majority of 70’s artists that transitioned into the 80’s and look at their output. It’s not entirely their fault. Production was getting slicker and the new synth sound was all the rage. Everyone was doin it. Even towards the end, Jimmy Page was getting more experimental in the studio. Sure, they’d eventually turn it around and get back to basics, but there would still be a few albums that would’ve sucked balls due to slick production and too much keyboards.

I don't really mind the keyboards but that 80's drum sound!

Early 80’s over-production is just a pet peeve of mine.

Quiet Riot I could see (although Id'd be willing to bet most people at first didn't know about Slade and their version) but at least Great White had Rock Me under their belt before Once Bitten Twice Shy.

The QR cover success actually got people interested in Slade and they cut the "Power Supply" album cuz of it, but yeah, I agree with ya. Before "Rock Me" though, GW released "Face the Day" which was a minor hit and also a cover. Almost every studio has at least one cover song, and some have two. Then there is all the Zep cover stuff and other covers on live albums they did. It just seems a bit much to me.

Way back in high school (around 1991 or so) I worked at a small market in town and there was a girl who worked the deli counter with me. She was super Christian and was always telling me that Ozzy and Megadeth were evil and how could I call myself a Christian and listen to them and blah, blah, the usual stuff. One day, I had enough and said, "well, who do you listen to?" and she replied Petra. Now, it's pre internet days so I couldn't just "check 'em out" online and I wasn't dropping a ten spot on a tape or record, so I just filed it and forgot about it. Until...in 2006 I find No Life Til Metal and I finally check 'em and...so underwhelmed. Maybe it was the spite I felt from that girl back in the day? Who knows? The tune you posted was certainly good and makes me want to investigate further as it's been over a decade since I fired up a bunch of songs on youtube. So, maybe it will be different this time.

The frustrating thing about recommending Petra to anyone is that they were a band of the most chameleon type throughout their career. The debut is pure southern rock, the next couple kind of a folk rock/soft rock variety, then they had More Power to Ya and Not of this World which were exceptional hard space rock records, then Beat the System which goes in a completely weird New Wave direction, then Back to the Street, when the Elefante Bros took over, which is a completely awful pop rock mess; then they one-upped their game with This Means War which was keyboard-drenched AOR (a lot of fans consider this to be a heavy album, but I just don't hear it), and FINALLY On Fire and Beyond Belief which are super catchy pop rock spins with a heavy metal shine. Then they fell apart IMO. Unseen Power and Wake-Up Call are glossy pop radio junk, the praise and worship stuff is, well, praise and worship, and Jekyll and Hyde is an OK rocker but in no way a recapturing of their glory days. Oh, and there's that God Fixation, which is hands down their worst album not worth mentioning. All that said, I always heavily advise those new to the Petra camp to start with On Fire, move to Beyond Belief, then make a u-turn to Not of This World and More Power to Ya (check out Judas's Kiss!), take a break and laugh along to Beat the System--it's weird but not a bad album--then This Means War for the final touch. After that just pick and choose the others randomly (Never Say Die is a decent spin too). Also don't forget their live album Captured in Time and Space, in which tunes up through Beat the System are given more muscle and Bob Hartman gets a fun guitar solo.
They're actually an interesting band to dive into.
TLDR; Petra has a confusing and diverse catalog and can't just be sampled here and there. Start with On Fire and Beyond Belief.
