The Wildhearts - P.H.U.Q.
That one was an acquired taste from the Wildhearts catalog for me. But now I thoroughly enjoy most of it.
I've been on a Wildhearts kick lately. I didn't have this particular album and snagged a copy off Amazon.

After seeing this post I did a search and have ordered it. I had a tape of the original when I first became a Christian and when I tried to see if I could upgrade to a CD, I saw how expensive just a used copy was. Than you Roxx records!

So does that Sonata Arctica sound like their earlier stuff or does it sound like a power metal version of latter day Rush like their later crap?
Man, they used to be one of my favorite bands until they "evolved" their sound.
They've never been the same and Tony Kakko has even gone as far to say they were never a power metal band. So I doubt it's like old Sonata. I was disappointed when they released Unia but found some of the albums after that at decent used prices and I enjoyed them enough so that's why I picked up this one. I'll let you know how it is after I listen to it but I doubt it'd be enough to win you back.
BTW, I know how big of a fan of The Wildhearts you are, have you heard this new one? How is it?

I downloaded the new one about a month ago and STILL have not listened to it all the way through. I find the production to be absolutely HORRIBLE.
Our resident Wildhearts expert Eyesore hears what annoys me about the album but he's able to look past it; unfortunately I am not. It sounds like utter crap so I can't even tell you whether the songs are good or not.

I've only heard samples, but it's definitely not like the early stuff. Seems like a solid album, though I've enjoyed everything that came after Winterheart's Guild.
And Kakko is high. They're still pretty much a power metal band. They're not doing that Dragonforce stuff, never have, but those comments of his were stupid.

Yeah, I don't mind it. It's a good album, but far from their best. I like Ginger's new solo album, Headzapoppin, much better.

No, not like the early stuff, though the "power metal version of Rush" sound was only on Unia. After that, they did slow down a bit but shades of old SA was always there. Not sure how I feel about the new one after the first listen. The first song had shades of the early material but the guitars were so low in the mix that it didn't quite get there. As a matter of fact the guitars are low in the mix the entire album which threw me off. The songs were pleasant and melodic (though not very memorable) but the guitar sound could have been more "crunchy" if you know what I mean. Kind of the problem I had with the recent Battle Beast album, though at least the songs there are much more memorable.

Not sure what it is about the production you guys are hearing, so I was able to enjoy the album without difficulty. This is only my second Wildhearts album but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Every song is catchy and memorable.

Then you should investigate the Wildhearts, Ginger Wildheart, Hey! Hello! catalogue. Ginger Wildheart is my favorite songwriter out there; if you've enjoyed the two albums you have then definitely check out the rest of The Wildhearts stuff and also Ginger's solo albums. Hey! Hello! is more or less Ginger's "power pop/punk" band.
Oh, and be forewarned, the last couple Ginger Wildheart albums have been more "country" (at least that's what he calls it; to me a slide-guitar and fiddle in the instrumentation does not a country album make), but you should for sure check out his "100%" and "Year Of The Fan Club" albums. They contain gems like this:

I'm a big fan of nearly everything Ginger has done. The guy is an amazing songwriter. It's mind-boggling how many brilliantly catchy songs this guy has written over the years.
Beware of the album Endless Nameless. I don't think Renaissance Men is difficult to listen to, but Endless Nameless is a joke. So many great songs utterly ruined by an intentionally awful mix. Baffling, really.
Some of his more obscure stuff, like Clam Abuse, is kind of weak, but beyond that it's a gold mine, man.
