These guys lost me a bit with some of their later albums, with songs that just came across too messy for me. But I'm really digging what they've released from the upcoming album. Sounds like the debut, which I still think is their best album.
Thoughts?

Yeah, I don't dislike any of their albums, but there are a number of songs that, like I said, just come across messy to me.

not a big fan.
I have some of their songs on those free cds that come with each metal hammer release.
maybe I should sit down and listen to them again. but I am not sure it will do much for me.

I am not a huge fan but I do like them and dig this tune.
I so far only have the first two discs.

Meh - that pretty much sums up my thoughts on the new singles - "The devil in I" is super boring. I like some of their older stuff a lot more, though I really don't listen to them much.

I have a buddy who is a fan and tried getting me into them. Too noisy and chaotic for me. The screamy vocals don't help.

Amazing band that doesn't deserve all the hate. You get thrashy riffs, maniacal vocals, tribal drumming, fast solos, doomy breakdowns, brutality, memorable melodies, and not one has it ever been lazy or derivative. Grouping these guys into the nu metal pool makes no sense to me, and i hate most of those groups.
What hurt their sound imo is when they tried too hard in writing for the radio, such as with their last album (which had four good songs on it). When they fight convention, however, they shine. That's why the debut is their best, it bucks trends (or started them). Vol 3 was an epic masterpiece in its own right, and was poorly represented by Before I Forget, the most formulaic song on the album. The rest of that album is one of the greatest musical projects of the 21st century.
Anyway I'm on mobile so can't listen to this now. Will give it a shot tonight.

Never could get into these guys. I think Metalguy sums it up best.

Some tracks I dig... plenty of heaviness and a tight groove..... they're one of those bands I can listen to but I don't any of their stuff.... My boys (young men now) went through a total Slipknot phase about 6-7 years ago.... hence my exposure.... perhaps more than I really wanted....

I enjoy Corey's vocals a lot, but Slipknot never clicked with me. These new songs are the same. I just can't get into them. Stone SOur though, is another animal, and I love them!

Never a fan of the popular Slipknot, but I do remember liking the crossover/thrash metal band of the same name from 1989 a lot:
Revelation Records recently reissued their self-titled EP.

I think I posted this in the other (but can't remember....), I'd go see them live if I had the chance but not a big fan. I've heard a couple songs that I like by them, but I'm not a big fan of drop B tuning...

It's not that I don't like them but there is so much great shit out there that Slipknot, even on their best day don't really register with me. I too kind of lump them in with Machine Head but I think that Machine head are head and shoulders above.

There's more musical merit in that one crossover EP than the mallcore Slipknot has displayed in 5 albums spanning 15 years.

I actually agree with you on this.
Quality over quantity. Some bands have done more for me with just a mere EP or two than one that releases albums every other year.

Sounds like a mediocre Cryptic Slaughter knock off to me. How do you guys measure "musical merit" exactly?
