| Getting ready to watch the Cards/Braves game 2. Cards won last night 4-3 as our closer tried to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again. | Some Sci-Fi B-movie madness tonight:
Battle Beyond the Stars - Been wanting to see this since I was a kid; just never got around to it. I doubt I would have even enjoyed it as a kid. Competent ship design and a diverse cast can't save this from the dull mess that it is. The dogfights are so ineptly edited that you lose track of who's shooting who. What makes this worse is that the entire 10-20m climax is made up of this. And Sybil Danning looks much better than she acts. I was expecting a little more, to be honest.
Moontrap - Chekov and The Chin! Silly space fun with a good layer of 50's camp where A Lot of Things Happen before the real plot of robots on the moon kick in. It's far from decent--the gravity on the moon shifts frequently, pacing is horrible, and Walter Koenig is just a bad, bad actor--but it is competently directed with a lot of imagination and fun. Major points go to the FX and set design--looks like an endless supply of dry concrete was effectively used for moon dust, and the robots look absolutely terrifying. One thing that harms the films is how our hero astronauts come across a massive derelict ship, a body, and an alien pod in deep space--only to bring back the latter two as the ship is entirely forgotten for the remainder of the film. You'd think they'd explore it some. Bonus points for getting the science right, for the most part, in this one.
On a side note, there's an old christian movie from the 80's called On Our Own--it's filth--that had an attractive lead that I had a huge crush on. Welp, in this movie I actually got to see her breasts. Too bad I missed out on this one when I was young. | |

| "Under Siege" (1992) in Steven Seagal's entertaining "Die Hard" variant, a group of terrorists take over the USS Missouri, intent in stealing its nuclear missiles. Fortunately the ship's cook happens to be Casey Ryback - former Navy SEAL, one man army and all around American bad ass. Tommy Lee Jones is a hoot as the head bad guy and Erika "Baywatch" Eleniak adds some eye candy. Seagal's best movie, for whatever that's worth. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| "Under Siege 2: Dark Territory" (1995) Steven Seagal's back as Navy SEAL Casey Ryback, whose cross country train trip with his niece is interrupted by terrorists. The usual mayhem follows. Eric Bogosian (who's usually above this sort of thing) is a decent bad guy but the rest is by the numbers. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug". Ok, this is more like it. It isn't quite LOTR tier because they still managed to shoehorn a boatload of stupidity in the second half of the film, but there's definitely SOME magic here. All in all however it just feels like a sadly lost opportunity when it's over... | |

| I was disappointed that the Rams didn't draft Ha Ha Clinton Dix with their 13th pick because we need a safety. But the "experts" seem to think that adding Aaron Donald to our front 4 with Chris Long, Michael Brockers and Robert Quinn gives the Rams a "Fearsome Foursome". We'll see. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.
