That sounds good.  I haven't had a good cream ale in a while.

BeerAdvocate gave it an 80 which ranks a "Good".  I'd try it if I could find it.

The wife is workin' an overnight shift tonight, so I aim to get a serious tank on. Got a 12 pack of Yuengling Lager chillin' on my front deck (natural refrigeration!) and a couple of 24 oz cans of Pabst in reserve in case I burn through that.

Once she leaves the house, it's beerz 'n' bad movies on Netflix at Casa Del Frederico. WoooooT!

lol! Can you get Troeg's offerings in your neck of the woods? It's a PA brewery. My work buddy from Reading, PA goes back twice a year and I always have him get me a case or two of "Troegenator" It's a doppelbock in a can (yes, I'm overcoming my prejudice of canned beers). He just delivered the latest case a few weeks ago and I think this year's batch is the best yet.

Highly recommended if it's available in your area.

I've heard of Troeg's but I don't think I've ever seen it round my 'hood.

Went to my new favorite beer store today after a new highway that gets me there opened up a couple weeks ago.  And lo and behold, they were having a closeout sale on this beer; $3.99 a bottle, I used to pay $10.99 several months ago.  I bought a case today and may go back for another case tomorrow:

EDIT:  This is a Unibroue Belgian Dark DB so if you can find it I'd suggest picking it up.

OK, I conferred with my fellow beer snob at work today before our weekly team meeting and he agrees with me; something is just "off" with this year's Christmas Ale.  It's not bad but something is just missing, like they forgot one of the spices or something.  I thought maybe it was just me because until the last couple of years I always thought the Christmas Ale was overrated.  But he's the one who convinced me to keep trying it every year so if he says it's not quite right, it isn't.

OK, since this year's Schlafly's Christmas ale is pretty blah, I just picked up another case of the Pumpkin Ale at the last place in my county that still has it.

I've finally overcome my prejudice against canned beer.  Lately I've had several excellent beers that only come in cans.  I guess "can technology" has come a long way since my college days.

Had the Goose Island Bourbon County today....super good. Pretty boozy at first, with excellent smoothness and mouthfeel. Huge hit of strong black coffee at the end.

Pricey as hell, $22 for a 4-pack, but I wasn't buying so I didn't care.

Just opened up something I picked up today from Avery Brewery called "Pump(KY)n".  It's a bourbon barrel-aged porter with pumpkin and spices that weighs in at 17.22% ABV.

Good thing these only come in 12oz bottles because the ABV is surprisingly well-hidden.

Wow, beer bonanza!

First I went to Randall's hoping against hope that somehow they still had some Founders Backwoods Bastard left.  This stuff comes out in October and I totally forgot about it until a couple weeks ago.  I've checked everywhere and everyone is sold out.  Well I drove the 25 miles to the nearest Randall's and as I was walking around gathering up various Christmas ales all of a sudden....(*cue the celestial choirs*).  The had eight 4 packs sitting there.  Scarfed those up.

Then on my way home, I stopped at the local Schnucks (regional grocery chain) hoping to find this year's Schlafly Culinaria Old Ale (only available at Schnucks).  I've been checking every day because I know this is the time of year it comes out.  I went to the bomber section of the refrigerator and...(*cue the celestial choirs AGAIN*).  They had 6 bottles.  Scarfed those up.

Now begins my annual scavenger hunt where I take a day and hit up all the Schnucks I can find and buy up all their Schlafly Culinaria Old Ale.  Last year I ended up rounding up 7 1/2 cases (I sold 2).  So probably next weekend I'll start my annual quest.

Yep!  And it's a huge chain around here; like Kroeger in the south.

I know, when I moved here and discovered the chain all I could think of was the little chickenhawk from the Warner Bros cartoons who kept trying to roast Foghorn Leghorn saying FL was a "loudmouth shnook" because the hound told him that's what FL was.

Beer! - Page 16 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Beer!   Beer! - Page 16 Icon_minitimeMon Dec 22, 2014 6:45 pm

Wow!  I'm now a legend at Schlafly.  (Warning, this is going to be a long post...)

It's become a Toho tradition every year about this time for me to round up Schlafly's Old Ale which is only available at the Schnuck's grocery chain (yeah, I know, we've been here before but wait, it gets better)

So I finally found 6 bottles at my local Schnucks 2 weekends ago and as usual I scarfed them up.  What I didn't notice at the time was that they scanned as Schlafly's Imperial Stout which is 11.49 instead of the Old Ale which costs $8.99.  Anyway, I began my annual quest and found another store that had 6 bottles.  But this time when I checked them out myself I paid attention to how they scanned.  Five bottles again scanned as the stout @ 11.49 but one bottle scanned correctly as Old Ale @ 8.99.  THis time I called the manager and convinced her that the correct price was 8.99.

When I got home, I looked at the bottles.  Turns out the one that scanned correctly was from 2013.  So I looked at the bar code number.  Sure enough the one on the 2013 bottle was different from the 2014 versions I bought.  Then I dug out a Schlafly's Imperial Stout that I'm cellaring (the stuff really mellows with age) and sure enough, the bar code on the stout matched the bar code on the new Old Ale.

So I emailed Schlafly's quality control.  Here is their response:

Quote :
Thank you for contacting me about this issue. I’m sorry for the late response I had to talk to several departments about what went wrong here. I’m glad you brought this to my attention because we were unaware of the issue and we have now fixed the problem. We printed new stickers and hit all the stores with the beer as well as the wholesaler inventory, so the bottle should scan with the right price now. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you. If you go to Schnucks where you bought the beer they should be aware of the issue and you should be able to get a refund for what you overpaid. Also if you’re able to come by the Schlafly Bottleworks location I would like to give you a couple bottles of the Old Ale on us. Thanks again for letting us know about the issue and I hope you have a happy holidays.

Thanks,

Emily Parker
Quality Assurance Manager
The Saint Louis Brewery
Makers of Schlafly Beer

So my friend and I are going to visit Schlafly Bottleworks the day after Christmas (when they already have special prices anyway) and collect my free bottles.  Hell, I think they should let both of us drink for free for the aggravation I saved the company.

BTW, I continued my annual beer quest to round up the Old Ale this past weekend and managed to score 42 bottles, all with MY sticker on them so they scanned correctly.
