| I've yet to taste a "barleywine" that I've liked. I avoid that style as much as I avoid IPAs

I will too from now on. I hear in England they are a lot less bitter but of course you and I don't live in England.

| My stout experiments are over. Samuel Smith's Chocolate is great but every other one has been a bust. My last two (which I tried tonight and promptly dumped) have been the worst. Buffalo Bayou's Red Velvet and Gingerbread stouts were highly sour. So much so that the lingering aftertaste is making it hard to enjoy my SS Organic Chocholate. | |

See if you can find Stone Russian Imperial Stout sometime. I think it's gone for now but check again next spring. Stouts are one of my favorite styles and right now is the time for me to enjoy Crown Valley's "Imperial Pumpkin Smash" which is a combination of a chocolate stout and a pumpkin ale. Good stuff but I'm sure it's not available where you live. Apparently you just live in the "armpit of the universe" when it comes to beer DB. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Apparently you just live in the "armpit of the universe" when it comes to beer DB. It would appear so. I still can't find that one Unibroue you suggested. I have seen that Russian Imperial Stout around so that is always an option. The Samuel Smith stouts are the only ones available around here that I've enjoyed. Those stouts I tried I have a feeling you might not even like. They were very reminiscent of that Belgian IPA I had. Much like that was a Belgian taste hidden by nastiness, they had a stout taste hidden by what I can describe as an extreme bitter sourness. IOW, if there is such thing as an IPA Stout, then Buffalo Bayou has cornered the market.

| I took the day off yesterday so I could make my annual run to Sams Club to buy Halloween candy. No "fun size" bars from the Toho household; I buy the combo fundraiser packs at Sams. It's become a tradition in my neighborhood. I now get kids who say their older siblings told them about "this cool house that gives out full size candy bars". Anyway, the reason I'm posting this here is because my Sams is across the Missouri river and when I'm over there I also hit up my favorite beer store. I dropped a pretty penny there yesterday picking up stuff like Stone Russian Imperial Stout, Founders Breakfast Stout (if you like coffee DB, see if you can find this one; it's a doublechocolate coffee oatmeal stout - it's a seasonal from Founders so I bought a case!), O'Fallon Toffee Stout, Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad, Gouden Carolus Belgian Quad, etc. Between there and Sams I dropped over $800. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3818/38394/ Southern Tier is one of my favorite brewers. THe good news is that if you can find Pumking, you'll probably be able to find Choklat around December and Crème Brulee in the Spring. The bad news is that I don't like Pumking; I think it tastes like V8 juice. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

It was really chilly and windy here today so I only had about 60 Trick or Treaters. My coworkers are gonna love me because I have a boatload of leftover candy and we have a team meeting Monday. That Sam Adams Pumpkin Ale isn't too bad. It's not as good as Schlafly's but for a widely available beer it's pretty good. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Didn't have a chance to try Pumking (thought I'm apprehensive due to your description, while I like V8, I'm not too sure what I would think of it in beer form) due to getting a bit too plastered. I had some liquor shots before trying this Belgian: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/42/3457/?view=beer&sort=&start=50 This was quite good and kind of reminds me of La Fin Du Monde or Terrible from Unibroue. It is quite high in ABV. I also tried the Founder's Breakfast Stout which I didn't realize until half way through was also quite high in ABV (I wasn't expecting it to because stouts aren't normally very high). BTW, I did like it though it did have the aftertaste I have a hard time with on stouts but at a very tolerable level. By the time I sobered up (thank you Arizona fruit punch) I was in no mood to start another high ABV beer. So the Pumking will have to wait. | |

A couple months ago I found a box set of 3 different years of Three Philosophers. The 2011 vintage was outstanding. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

I don't know how to explain the taste of this beer, but I do know I don't like it. After just a few sips, the aftertaste was so bad I couldn't finish the rest. Looks like I may need to stop experimenting with beers as I'm wasting money on stuff I can't finish drinking. There is a place called Central Market where you can sample beer before buying. I may just start shopping for beer there to avoid this stuff. Having another Breakfast Stout. I'm getting more and more use to the aftertaste. Trying to decide what would be a good snack to go with it.

| I just think Pumking is too "vegetable-y" tasting. I found that if I mixed it with something like Ofallon Pumpkin beer it was better. I looked for a beer that was heavy on the cinnamon and nutmeg and combined it with Pumking. But even then, I tried this beer 3 years in a row and I still don't like it so I'm done with it. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Cinnamon and nutmeg is what makes pumpkin beer so appealing. Pumking had the smell and there was a faint hint of it, but the other taste overpowered it. Not sure if I'd describe it as vegetable-y, I just know I found it fairly revolting. The St. Arnold one I had a while back was the closest to that description, I need to try that one again... just not with BBQ.

| Trust me DB, go back to the place you bought Pumking in a couple weeks and see if they have Southern Tier's Choklat. I GUARANTEE you'll love that. It tastes like the name implies, a stout made with semi-sweet chocolate. It's excellent.
I'll give you a heads up once I find it here this season. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

What's that? It's a beer my brother ordered for us when we were having pizza. I had never heard of it either. But it wasn't bad. I'm not really good at describing beers so I'm not sure how to better explain it for you.
