Insomniac Double Feature last night:
"Trick R Treat" (2009)
A cool, "Creepshow" style horror-anthology flick featuring several spooky stories - including a principal who moonlights as a serial killer, a pack of female werewolves, and a school bus load of ghostly children - which all intersect around the same small town on Halloween night. This flick strikes just the right balance between humor and horror and has become a Halloween season perennial for me.
"RoboCroc" (2013)
Yeah, this one is a "crock" all right. A secret government space launch crash lands near a zoo, and its payload of experimental "nanobots" invades the body of the zoo's giant salt water crocodile...transforming it into a souped up, super powered half-metallic killing machine. The "RoboCroc" then proceeds to invade the water park next door so it can chomp on lots of girls in bikinis while the military and a couple of zoo keepers (including Corin "Parker Lewis" Nemec) try to figure out how to kill the darn thing. Even when you keep the usually low standard of SyFy Channel Movies in mind, this one was still hellaciously bad. Like, "worst thing I've seen all year" bad.

The other night I watched an oldie but a goodie. Everybody knows the twist ending but it's still a pretty cool ending. Oh and on a funny side note, the movie takes place only 9 years from now !

I saw this one earlier this year for the first time in ages. Charlton Heston's performance was pure ham on the bone.

Still funny!!
Good movie to watch on a Saturday night with a couple of white russians in my system. I LOL'ed (that's what the kids say, right?) quite a bit.

Thief in the Night. I believe this may be the first evangelistic horror movie ever released...scared me as a kid but now--God there can't be on person out there that can take this seriously. Funny shit.

Season premieres of:
Haven Bones Sleepy Hollow(well-made, but incredibly silly - never thought I'd see the headless horseman shooting up cop cars with a machine gun!)
Thief in the Night. I believe this may be the first evangelistic horror movie ever released...scared me as a kid but now--God there can't be on person out there that can take this seriously. Funny shit.
I saw that with our church youth group back in the day! Freaked me out as a kid too. I still remember the song that runs through the whole thing.

Now I'm curious. What was the initial reaction amongst said group?

Terror, what else? I believe that was the intent of the movie; an evangelistic "Scared Straight" if you will.

Amazing, 2 episodes in on the latest Boardwalk Empire series and no sign of that headcase of a Margaret Thompson (Nucky's ex-wife), life is good at present.

Interesting. I remember being scared shitless when I saw it as a kid but looking at it now...well, Jesus, in the opening sequence the woman blindly runs into the bathroom while hearing a report about the rapture potential and screams upon finding a running electric shaver in the sink. No denial, deductive questioning, nothing. Just like "shit my boy is with the Lord!" It's so freaking goofy, and the music is High-Larious.
Yeah, well I was 12 when I saw it (in the theater believe it or not) so the whole theme of alienation/isolation/persecution just freaked out my pre-adolescent brain. I haven't seen the thing since (and that's over 40 years ago!) so I bet it looks pretty silly now.
Ya know, as I think about it, somebody could actually take the concept and make a decent sci-fi/horror movie out of it given the proper budget.

Spoofs are not great movies, but I enjoy them when they are well made. The Scary Movies have always done it right. Same can't be said about Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, etc. Of course nothing comes close to the Airplanes, Naked Guns, Hot Shots and Mel Brooks movies. They don't make spoofs like that anymore.

"Argo" (2012)
Ben Affleck directed and stars in this Oscar winning suspense/thriller (based on a true story) detailing a top secret 1980 CIA operation to get six American refugees out of Iran ... by posing as a Canadian film crew scouting locations for a fictitious science-fiction movie called "Argo."
Cool premise, great performances (esp. by Alan Arkin and John Goodman, who are hilarious as the Hollywood types who help set up the "op") and lots of period detail make for a fascinating flick. Good stuff.
