Favorite 2013 album releases

My favorite by a long shot as been The Avett Brothers - Magpie and the Dandelion.

I'm sure it's not everyone's cup o' tea on this board but I like it as well. Most of the flak I get from some people I know when I mention them probably comes from the fact you could classify these guys as part of the new wave of Americana music which gets a bit of guilt by hipster association.

Exactly. Very rare for me to experience an album where every track has equal weight, Not even the new Metal Church is like that. This album holds my attention throughout.

I think the energy that used to drive classic thrash, which is somewhat absent in today's retro bands, is ever-present here. Which is odd for Onslaught as they've always seemed to struggle with their sound. They sure got it right here, capturing that energy and razor sharp madness that I miss in the genre.

Hmm, the next time I need to viciously throw hammers at cinder blocks but lack the motivation, I'll give it a go!  

I agree that this record has something that a lot of modern thrash lacks. i can't put my finger on it, but it's there.

I'm gonna call it--my top release of the year:

Metal Church - Generation Nothing


Runner-up goes to Death Angel.

Honorable mentions: Accuser, Black Sabbath, and Onslaught.

I'm guessing you mean the other way around, as in modern thrash has filler whereas this release has none?

A lot of modern thrash sounds all filler to me, nothing vital, energetic or new. It's probably just the nostalgia thing that makes me like the Onslaught record.

Windhand - Soma is pretty much threatening to run away with my favorite of the year. The new Fates Warning is up there too.

This year is shaping up to be as good as last as far as I'm concerned. Even crazier is there is so much I haven't gotten yet. Can't remember two years in a row of such killer stuff coming out. And not just things that hit me right off, but albums that I'm playing over and over.

So many great albums this year. I'm having a hard time keeping it down to a Top 20, no less picking the top 10.

I've got it mostly pegged down to a Top 25, not in order. However, there are still a few key albums that I have not yet purchased such as Onslaught, Fates Warning, Evile, Krokus, Sodom, U.D.O., Vicious Rumors...

Good grief, it's been a slow CD-collecting year for me. With less than a month to go in 2013, I only purchased 41 CDs this year and of those, only eight (!!) were 2013 releases.

For whatever it's worth, out of those eight I'd say that the ToddRyche album and Newsted's Heavy Metal Music got the most spins, with Motorhead's Aftershock coming in at third.

I guess I'll be spending 2014 getting caught up on all the sh*t I missed in 2013. Haha

Thanks FatFreddy. I forgot about ToddRyche's CD. I gave that one a ton of spin time.

Of course The Geoff's album will be at everyone's #1 spot if they have any musical taste and integrity whatsoever.

That album seems to a distant bad memory in most people's mind now....

I've just tried to do my list and I've got to somehow find ten from a list of 25 that I really, really liked this year, and I really suck at trying to pick favorites from music that I really dig! (you'll be surprised to learn that neither of the Queensryche records are in the 25   )

Damn. Add Carcass to my list. Been spinning that like crazy and you know what? I think it may be their best album yet.

Also enjoying the new Deicide.

There's a lot I still want to get but I've reached the end of my fiscal road for the year with fun money. Gonna have to catch up next year. I need:

Since last year 2012   . Every year its amazing but this year bands like DEATH ANGEL or LIVING SACRIFICE are putting out their best albums in years!!!!. HOLY GRAIL new album is amazing too.
