Past "Undisputed Attitude"... you get "Diabolous in Musica pt.1" then followed by pt. 2, 3 and 4 Laughing ...and I blame them for being Soo Good in "Seasons In The Abyss"

I'm playing Diabolus In Musica this week in work and I'm digging it more that I can remember. I honestly can't remember why I didn't care for this album in the past.

It's not that I hated it or anything, it was just never the album I reached for when I wanted to hear me some Slayer. Funny how that happens.

Sounds like Slayer to me. don\'t know

Yeah, that album has a bad reputation for no reason whatsoever. It's actually one of my favorite Slayer albums post-1980s.

I am a huge fan of Slayer from the Show No Mercy album up to South of Heaven. After that I have never liked a full album. I have liked a few songs here and there though. Diabolus is by far their worst.

I totally agree with you. It has a few off-putting "groove beats" but overall it's great. Excellent production, good songs, and amazing drumming.

Some updates from Kerry King on the delay behind the next Slayer record:

“We got two songs completed last year that I thought were come out before Mayhem. And since they didn’t, they’re just gonna be on the record. They’ve just gotta get mixed. We have another one that just needs vocals and leads, and then me and Dave [Lombardo, drums] are working on eight complete other ones that we haven’t demoed. We’ve just gotta go in…

The whole hold-up now, as with every record we ever do, it seems like Rick Rubin changes distributors. And we’re kind of, like, left in limbo until he lands somewhere. I mean, realistically, we’re without a deal, but we plan on staying with Rick. But he’s working out his distribution. When that gets settled, we’ll be recording. So I am very comfortable saying it will be out this year.”

When asked about Hanneman's involvement post-spider bite:

“Not yet. I have enough material to do it on my own, if need be. But I’m open; if Jeff comes to the party with some material, hell yeah, I’ve got extras. I’ll play all the guitars. But I mean, I’ve been playing all the guitars for years anyway — except for Jeff’s leads."

I've always wondered about the division of labor in recording, interesting that Kerry plays all the guitar parts except for Jeff's leads.

I don't think that Christ Illusion gets enough love. Hell Awaits is the one for me though, nowadays when you hear a Slayer record it's 'Yup, that's Slayer' but the first time I heard HA it was like nothing I'd ever heard before and it changed my whole perspective.

You can never re-create the experience of first hearing a particular album or band. I think too many people try to use that kind of nostalgia as a quality measuring stick of a band's later material, instead of just judging each particular album on its own merits.

I agree and there is no way that initial impact can be re-created so it's unfair to use it as a yardstick for quality. Seasons of the Abyss and Master of Puppets are probably better records front to back than Hell Awaits and Ride the Lightning, the critic in me knows this but the eternal 14 year old knows nothing of the sort, those are HIS records and this is just as it should be.

I took a decade long break from listening to metal in the nineties so I neither heard Diabolus In Musica or was particularly aware of the forces at play in metal at that time, but listening to it now, I like it, seems like a solid record to me.

Interesting to find another person that took a decade-long vacation from metal. I did essentially the same thing from 1996 to 2006.

Seems like more and more folks are starting to come out in the open about the difficulties working with Rick Rubin. Maybe artists are starting to wise-up and realize Rick's not the "uber-producer" he once was?

In this particular instance it sounds like Rubin negotiates distribution on a case-by-case basis to get the best deal possible.

Seasons will always be tops for me, followed closely by South of Heaven.

However, there is no Slayer release I don't like to some degree. The last album that I loved straight through was Diabolus. I never understood the dislike for that album, as others mentioned here previously (nice to see it getting some love). But every release since has had some tunes I enjoy.

I am guilty at times of writing off bands after a particular time in their career, with a band member change or a shift in style or whatever. Sepultura jumps immediately to mind. Metallica too. But Slayer, I will always check out what they do.

Big trouble in the Slayer camp, Dave Lombardo has been replaced for the upcoming Australian tour after expressing dissatisfaction with Slayer's business practices.

Statement below:

“I want to personally apologize to all of our fans in Australia who have bought tickets for the tour expecting to see me in my usual place on the drums.”

“So that you all know the truth, as of the end of the business day on February 14th, I was notified that I would not be drumming for the tour in Australia. I’m saddened, and to be honest I am shocked by the situation.”

“Last year, I discovered 90% of Slayer’s tour income was being deducted as expenses including the professional fees paid to management, costing the band millions of dollars and leaving 10% or less to split amongst the four of us. In my opinion, this is not the way a band’s business should operate. I tried rectifying it by letting my band mates know, and Tom and I hired auditors to figure out what happened, but I was denied access to detailed information and the necessary back up documents.”

“I spent the Christmas and New Year holidays realizing I had toured all over the world in 2012, but yet, had not been paid (except a small advance) or provided a proper accounting for a full year’s sweat and blood. On top of this, I was told that I would not be paid until I signed a long form contract which gave me no written assurance of how much or on what basis management would deduct commissions, nor did it provide me access to the financial budgets or records for review. It also forbade me to do interviews or make statements having to do with the band, in effect a gagging order.”

“Last Monday, I sat down with Kerry and Tom to rehearse for Australia and to propose a new business model that I felt was the best way forward for Slayer to confidently protect itself so we could do what we do best . . . play for the fans. Kerry made it clear he wasn’t interested in making changes and said if I wanted to argue the point, he would find another drummer. On Thursday, I arrived at rehearsals at 1 pm as scheduled, but Kerry did not show. Rather, at 6:24 pm I received an email from the lawyers saying I was being replaced for the Australian dates.”

“I remain hopeful that we can resolve our issues. But once again, I sincerely apologize to all of our fans in Australia who spent their money expecting to see the 3 of us original Slayer members.
I look forward to seeing you in the future.”

Sincerely, Dave Lombardo

Saw that. Seems to me that they're either making so much that 10% is wonderful, which I doubt, or some other band members are getting much more than that.

Isn't this what happened with Don Felder and the Eagles?

1. Everything is fine
2. Don starts asking money questions
3. Band kicks him out
4. Don sues

I think #4 may be happening soon for SLAYER.
