Great flick... but did it make you wish you could reach thru the TV screen and punch Johnny Ramone in the face? Cuz that's how I felt all through that movie. Even my wife, who knew nothing about the Ramones, finally commented, "This guy's a dick!" about halfway through it.

End of the Century was very depressing, I do not know how Joey and Johnny Ramone were able to be in the same room let alone the same band, it was very sad. I am glad they stayed together as long as they did.

If memory serves, both C.Jay and Richie Ramone (former drummer) told stories about butting heads with Johnny in the "End of the Century" movie as well. Seems like the guy was a major control freak. As for Joey, he came across as very passive most of the time, like "Well, OK, whatever." Although as I said earlier, in any other band, one or the other of those guys (Johnny or Joey) would've probably went "screw you, I quit." They had a very strange dynamic for sure, but it obviously worked for them.

I thought the same thing. Although it won't ever change my opinion of the band or their music, it did put Johnny in a different perspective. He did come off as a real dick, but looking at the rest of the band (Joey, passive, DeeDee a mess, Tommy, not fully committed) I guess you needed someone to keep them in line, so to speak, and Johnny seemed to step up and fill that role. It probably wasn't always as harsh or sever, especially in the early days, but being in the business as long as the Ramones have been, I'm sure Johnny's demeanor and attitute got worse as time went by. End of the Century was shot at the end of a very long career, so were seeing the older, jaded Johnny.

One article I read years ago said that if the Ramones were a sit-com, they would've been "All In The Family," with Johnny as Archie Bunker (the tyrant) Joey as Edith (good natured scatterbrain), DeeDee as Gloria (space case) and Tommy (later Marky) as Meathead. That pretty much sums'em up I guess.

By the way, the resurgence of this thread reminds me that it was twenty years ago this week (October 6, 1988) that I first saw the Ramones live. It was at a tiny little dump club in Staten Island, New York called "The Wave." I was a freshman in college at the time and was a little nervous about going at first because I had never been to a show in a club before, and also because none of my friends wanted to go with me (posers! haha) so I had to figure out how to get there (via bus, through some questionable neighborhoods) all by my lonesome. Fortunately I did run into a couple of people I knew from school at the venue, so I had people to hang/slam with during the show and was able to bum a ride back to campus with them when it was over. It was an amazing experience!!! My first small venue show, my first-ever mosh pit, and even though the opening band (Savage Thrust, a local Staten Island thrash band) sucked and the club's sound system was sub-par to say the least, I still loved every moment of it. Dee Dee Ramone left the band a few months after that gig so I feel privileged that I got to see the "classic" Ramones lineup at least once.

I like the Ramones. I don't have any of their albums, which is strange considering my love of old-school punk, but I've been meaning to. Any recommendations?

Okay.
Isn't "Too tough to die" a Black Label Society song?

Listen to this man, Schbopo. RAMONES MANIA was the album that got me started on this band years ago too. As far as compilations go, the LOUD FAST RAMONES: THEIR TOUGHEST HITS collection is good stuff too. Either of those would be a good introduction to 'em.

I third the recommendation of Ramones Mania. Until the Rhino Box set came out last year, it was my favorite comp album.

Ramones Mania was my introduction to band back when I was in college. I'd also recommend Hey, Ho!! The Anthology (2-cd's). It's an awesome collection. I'd like to get that Rhino Box set someday, although I think I've heard/own a good portion of the tracks on there already. Still looks cool though.
Joey's solo album is on my playlist this week. During the World Series, Fox used his version of "Wonderful World" during some promos and it gave me chills. Great song and Joey did a great cover. I miss that big, doofy b*stard.

The Rhino set is cool because in addition to the neat artwork, it has a DVD of Ramones videos.

I love that cover of "Wonderful World" too. Joey always did have a knack for cool, oddball cover songs.

I'm bored and in a Ramones mood so I was just posting a couple of their vids to my Facebook page and came across this clip that made me laugh out loud... may I present to you the LEGO RAMONES!!
Technically it should be a Lego C-Jay singing this song, not a Lego Joey, but it's such a damn cute video that I'll let the inaccuracy slide.
My son is a major Lego Maniac, he's gonna get SUCH a kick out of this video when I show it to him!!

Hey FF or anyone else have you heard of the Exploding White Mice? Great band from the 80's who had a massive Ramones influence going through them and were named after a scene in the Rock N' Roll High School movie.....
