Is there enough fans here for a Doom/Sludge/Stoner/Post-Metal thread? Besides Thrash, this is what I'm primarily interested in. I just can't get enough of this schtuff, and want to find out what other bands are hot in some of these, still virtually untapped, sub-genres. Who's on board with this particular lot of bands, or a similar roster?
Baroness
Mouth of the Architect
Mastodon
Pelican
Candlemass
Giant Squid
Intronaut
Trouble
Sahg
Blood Ceremony
Grand Magus
Torche
Deadbird
Solitude Aeturnus
The Ocean
Witchcraft

Ever been to "The Cave"? If you don't mind a ton of orange font, it may have a clientele you are similar to. They talk about doom and fart a lot over there.

I've never gotten whole-hog into the doom/stoner thing, but if you gimme some early Trouble I'm a happy guy.

Yup. I like a lot of doom and stoner stuff.
Some favorites that come to mind: My Silent Wake Place of Skulls Fireball Ministry Trouble Candlemass Veni Domine (although they've moved away from that sound on more recent albums) Last Chapter Solitude Aeturnus
I'm also anxious for the next Troglodyte Dawn CD, "Darkest Void".

Thanks to detuned, I have checked out High on Fire, excellent band which than led me to explore the band Sleep, with their great album 'Jersualem' which consist of one song split into 6 tracks. Great stuff so thanks detuned for introducing me to these bands.

I always preferred the slower, heavier, more atmospheric brand of metal growing up. Black Sabbath being the prime ingredient of this particular school. During the 80's Trouble carried the torch and I followed. (along with various other groups including Witchfinder General, St. Vitus, Masters Of Reality, etc)
Then in late 1992 I was browsing a record store in Maryland when the guy working behind the counter throws this puppy on the stereo:
Kyuss - Blues For The Red Sun
I didn't get through 30 seconds of the first track "Thumb" before I was dashing to the counter asking "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?". The sound of that album was exactly what I had been searching for...without even knowing it. It's not often that I'll hear an album that changes my perceptions, but that one did. What Kyuss managed to do was take Master Of Reality/Volume 4 style "tone" and merge it with a groove. Instead of the staccato machine gun style rhythm common during that era...they went more towards a garage band aesthetic in the spirit of Band Of Gypsys, Robin Trower, James Gang, anything with that heavy loping funk groove.
When the album "Welcome To Sky Valley" was released I picked it up the day it came out...and it even more solidly confirmed that of all the groups on the planet, these guys were tuned into my wavelength.
That started me down the path, that also led me to groups like Sleep, Cathedral, Tumbleweed and some of the other artists on the scene in the early 90's.
That's part 1 of a continuing series of collected Stoner moments...

I'm down with Kyuss' two big titles, 'Sky Valley' and 'Red Sun'. I gotta be looking into this Kylesa and Crowbar stuff. I think maybe I more interested in the Doom and Sludge thang than the Stoner vibe. I've heard a little of Fu Manchu and Orange Goblin here and ova there...and, well, I guess I just wasn't high enough. How about Down and Corrosion for the bluesy/sludge thing? I just heard a bunch of Down whilst gittin rid of the mounds of snow which pounded the east coast.
What new titles have dropped recently? The Candlemass EP was alright. Ya had the Witchfinder General disc late last year and whatnot. But, what's new, ming?

Recently I've been hooked on the bands doing the full-on retro thing. So far my favorites are all from one city in Sweden (Orebro).
Witchcraft Graveyard Dead Man
I've had the pleasure of seeing Graveyard (twice) and Witchcraft during the last 6 months, both bands are much better live than the CDs have captured thus far.
Dead Man has the potential to be something really special, I've had both of their albums on constant rotation for the last few months.

Can not eat much of the Funeral Doom. I got a depressive streak to begin with and this stuff is, like, push ya over the edge and 'just get it ova with' music. I got this one here title called Ahab - Call of the Wretched Sea, and, son, I kid you not when I say that this here thing absolutely sucks. lol. Nah, I kid. It's just really, really bad. lol.
