What bands do you like currently? Any recommendations?
I've liked Crowbar for years, but I've been getting into Mastodon and High on Fire in more recent times.

I'm already familiar with those bands... but thanks. And from what i've heard, Mastadon are a (progressive stoner metal hybrid). So I think they fit.

I've heard about half of those bands, but I don't really know what they sound like... So I'll check 'em out. Thanks.

Love me some Mastodon.
I got into High on Fire not too long ago upon listening to Death is this Communion. I still have yet to get anything else by them, but I know plenty of their songs. "Now you realiiiieeeiiize.....DEATH IS THIS COMMUNION!"

My favorite genre of metal by far right now. All of the above are good stuff. Eternal Elysium is some good Japanese stoner stuff, along with Church of Misery. There are just too many good bands to list!!

Fair enough. I do have the earlier Mastodon releases and would label them more in the sludge/groove realm on those rather than stoner. When I think of stoner, I'm thinking about Electric Wizard, YOB, Sleep, etc.

Eh. "Slow & Heavy" should be the name of this genre, that essentially sums it up.

First band I always think of when I hear "Stoner Rock" is Fireball Ministry.

Although not recommended, I used to play YOB while attempting to sleep, and the weird feeling you get when you are half asleep and half awake while a slow and heavy band plays in the background is something else. Same with Ahab. Or Sleep.

YOB is amazing, especially cause they mix in an almost avant-garde aesthetic to their compositions. They need to team up with Dylan from Earth and have him produce an album, I'd like to hear what that collaboration could accomplish.

Well, I did have the word "sludge" as part of my post title... The first Mastodon I heard was Leviathan. And that has a sludge/hardcore sound. On the more recent stuff they have incorporated some 70's prog and stoner elements.

Not really... Some of the bands have their faster moments. Even Crowbar picks up the pace on occasion. Also High on Fire usually play at mid-tempo.

I also used to like Cathedral. The music is good, but I don't like the vocals...
