| I'm a huge fan of Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd. I have a suspicion that Skynyrd will run with this, but frankly, I like Hatchet a bit more. They incorporated more metal in their sound in the 70's and 80's. Hlubeck's writing was superb IMO.

| I prefer Molly Hatchet, I just like their first two albums especially 'Flirting With Disaster' and Danny Joe Brown IMO had one of coolest voices. | |

| Skynyrd gets my vote and are a top 10 favorite band of mine. I like Hatchet a lot as well. Skynyrd just were better songwriters and had a lot of songs that hit the heart. | |

| Molly Hatchet by far. Beatin' The Odds, The Deed Is Done and Lightening Strikes Twice are my fave and they have some kick arse album covers!!! | |

| Skynyrd.
Hatchet's albums were pretty iffy for me after the first two. Last Hatchet album I actually liked was Beatin' The Odds. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

I never got the Allman Brothers? They didn't know what they wanted to be IMO. I would classify them as a jam band more then Southern Rock. | |

| I like some Allman's but they definitely were more like a Southern blues jam band than the rest of the Southern rockers of the time. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I agree with both Metalrob and toho, the Allman Brothers were blues based than either Molly Hatchet or the Skynyrd boys, and they also could fit comfortably in the jam band genre. I suppose the real godfathers of Southern Rock would be Black Oak Arkansas, I am not sure how many people remember this band of southern red necks led by Jim Dandy. | |

| Skynyrd is the defining band of Southern rock to me. Hatchet had some good stuff but some of it I found blah. |

| I don't get it. What was "blah" about Hatchet?
I can name about 20 songs off the three albums after Flirtin' With Disaster that absolutely slay, especially "Fall of the Peacemakers". Absolutely one of the great songs ever. How about Bloody Reunion, Power Play, Lady Luck, What's It Gonna Take, Both Sides, Ain't Even Close, Sweet Dixie, Edge of Sundown (live), Ragtop Deluxe...
OK, there was a couple less spectacular albums when Sony was forcing them to sound like .38 Special. Blackfoot had the same problem in the mid-80's with clueless record company executives pushing these Southern Rock bands to do pop simply because it was working for .38 Special.
I really wonder if you guys have given albums like "Devil's Canyon", "Silent Reign of Heroes", "Kingdom of XII" and "Warriors of the Rainbow Bridge" a chance. These newer albums are awesome! _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| I didn't feel it was right to vote as I am a big fan of Skynryd, but almost wholly unfamiliar with MH except for the hits. I would have certainly voted for LS, though. Peace. | |

The Allman Brothers came out significantly earlier than either Skynyrd or Hatchet...and their influences are MUCH more varied than either of those bands. That's the reason I find them about 100 times more interesting than any of the other so-called "southern rock" bands. The Allman's knew exactly who they wanted to be...themselves...not pigeonholed into any category. They succeeded 100%. |
