it's not about chord progressions or notes or scales or whatever, music is about feeling, its about the emotions one puts into a song. that's why there is so many different types of music and the composers who write that music.
good example:
yngwie ( and other shredders) feel songs with thousands of notes but, john cage wrote songs with the fewest notes possible. There are people who love both types and those who dislike them.
It doesn't matter if bands use the same notes or have the same sound, it's all about the feeling one puts into the music they write or play.
I am impressed Sam many people donot know who John Cage was and the few that do didnot care for his music, that example you used '4'33' I thought was humorous and always wondered if he was John Cage was being serious or putting on over on the snobby critics that praise anything they thought could be considered 'Avant Garde" even four minutes and 33 seconds of silence.

I learned about john cage through my search for minimalistic composers and bands. While I love ultra technical music I have developed a love for ultra minimalistic music as well.
I think he had a good sense of humor about the whole avant garde thing and decided to see if people would take him seriously, and they did!

How does one know how much feeling an artist puts in a song? Artists play what they are capable of playing. Know one can know what feelings another person/artist is putting into there music. Only the artist himself can. I have had this discussion on may boards with many awesome people.

only you can decided how much feeling an artist put into the song. if feel the emotions poor out of a song then the artist has succeed. it is all up to the individual listener to decided how much feeling is in a song. as far as ac/dc is concerned I feel there love of a good time pour out of every song. you may not agree but you feel emotions poor out of alterbridge and I think they are a bunch of whining pussy's. some people may find emotion and enjoyment out of Brittany spears latest single but i sure don't. etc..etc...etc.

I understand what you are saying, but thats more influence then feeling. As far as the cheap shot to Alter Bridge, have you even listened to them? Where is there whining? Keep the band bashing out of it.

ahh whatever, this is one of those conversations that could go on forever. music is all about opinion.

Go listen to the solo in Testament's "Return to Serenity." Then try to repeat what you just wrote.

You were on a roll until you made the stupid Alter Bridge comment.

I love that solo one of the best. That solo fits that song perfectly and is amazing as I have stated many times. I understand feeling and the way it is used, but it is hard for me to sit here and say I know how much feeling an artist puts in a song, because I don't.
For the record I don't think Alter Bridge are sissies, I actually think they are a great band and Myles Kennedy is about 100x better than Scott Stapp, but I also liked them when they were Creed, but Myles Kennedy takes to a whole different level/
He must be good if Jimmy 'Fricking' Page is seriously considered him for the vacant vocal spot for whatever they were call their project.

Listen to Billie Holiday sing "Strange Fruit" if you want to hear how much emotion is possible to put into a song.
or for an instrumental offering:
Listen to John Coltrane on "Alabama"
The first song was written about the lynchings of blacks in the south during the 1930's, the Coltrane song was written at the height of the civil rights movement. I KNOW how much emotion was put into those songs...and you can feel it in the performance.

De I know what you mean as I have performed songs and really had to hold back tears sometimes. I have a performance where I actually do cry on that link in my signature. The song is Watching Over You about my g/f losing her brother. I understand emotions and when they are used. But again I cant really tell what that person is feeling I just can assume.
Most of what I was saying is based on Ac/Dc as I really cant find emotion in there music as its pretty much the same style through out there career.
SAM no worries here, like I stated I like Ac/Dc there are just differences in our opinions, nothing wrong with that.
good to know we're cool , interesting question: do you think we would have had the same discussion if ac/dc had said something similar about dimmu?
Depends on where the discussion was. I'm not a fan of Dimmu or black metal in general but I have heard songs from them. So it really depends on what is said about them, and if I have enough information to comment on it.

Listen to the song Ride On........it's Bon Scott laying it all out there, about him drowning his sorrows because of every "Bridge he's burnt" and trying to comfort himself with prostitutes and the bottle but it doesn't fix anything......eventually he says f*ck it and he's going to "Ride On".....it's storytelling and lament of Hank Williams and Merle Haggard quality. A very sad but optimistic song. The Bon Scott era of AC/DC had alot more depth to it......what macho hard rocker from the 70's would write a song like "Ride On"........

I meant the whole ac/dc is awesome/mediocre leading to intense discussions about music and feeling and all that stuff.
Or would everyone just been like "dimmu, yeah whatever"
