The vocals are the biggest draw for me. I love that falsetto style when it's done well (Freddie Mercury, Bono, King Diamond, Peter Gabriel) and I think it takes real balls to use it as much as he does, especially since it's not a common style these days.

I like falsetto a lot (unfortunatly I can't do it) but his just didn't appeal to me.

they're the only famous rock/metal band to come out of my area Razz. they're actually friends of a friend of mine. i've never met any of them tho. they've got a new band now without the singer called 'the stone gods.' apparantly they're going in a heavier and less cartoony direction

That's cool, man...diff'rent strokes, ya know! The Darkness - Page 2 Gary_coleman_1

I managed to download all of these guys b-sides and bonus tracks (14 in all - enough for another album!) and I put them all together on a cdr comp and titled it Barebacksides. What a Face

Here's the tracklist:

01. Best of Me
02. How Dare You Call This Love?
03. Bareback
04. Makin' Out
05. Physical Sex
06. Out of My Hands
07. Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)
08. I Love You 5 Times
09. Planning Permission
10. Curse of the Tollund Man
11. Grief Hammer
12. Wanker
13. Sh*t Ghost
14. Shake (Like a Lettuce Leaf)

cool

Christmas Time nearly got to no. 1 when it came out for Christmas here. It was robbed by Mad World, the most un-Christmassy song ever.

Somewhat over-the-top, but good over-the-top. I approve. Cool Good time rock an' roll is so gone from today's scene....

I just go into them in the past week or so, which is also when I first heard of them. A shame that they broke up, but I might need to check out the new band that came out of them.

Thanks for that. The article is a bit biased and hostile, but if their quotes of Justin are accurate, that's a damn shame. No

Woops - wrong drug. I guess I forgot to take some ginko yesterday
I just came across this blog entry from his MySpace page:

Justin Hawkins wrote:

www.myspace.com/justinhawkinsworld

It is a fresh new beginning, and I shall update/blog on a daily basis.

I've already blogged on the subject of The Darkness, and my new blurb blows the big brother and cocaine rumours right out of the water.

Happy New Year - hurrah and hurrumph!

Jus x x x
Unfortunately, the link to the new page states that the account has been cancelled. Anybody heard what Justin is up to these days?

Man! I am digging on their second album also! It's got a higher production value and sounds a lot more mature than the debut, so it might not grab you as quickly, but if you give it a chance, there is some awesome material on here!

I've been playing "Hazel Eyes" on repeat all day long! I can't get enough of that song!

Scott, I think you'll dig it! The Darkness - Page 2 309780

Hazel Eyes...

The Darkness - Page 2 11787122uo3

I hail from the flatlands of East Anglia
A town that once could boast prosperity
She had trekked for many moons from a land afar
But the cruel nets had emptied the northen sea

And she said "Hoots, I cannae get back tae
me hoos in bonny Scotland"

Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!
Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!

The elements had taken their toll on her
Her face was weather beaten and her hair greasy
I had never seen a set of eyes more hazelerer
And a tear did fall as she looked up at me

And said, "Hoots, I cannae get back tae
me hoos in bonny Scotland"

Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!
Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!

I shall travel with thee
For to see your folks in Scotland
With their blessing, on one knee
I shall ask for your left hand

Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!

Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!
Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!
Girl with the hazel eyes - Aaaaah!

I shall travel with thee
For to see your folks in Scotland
With their blessing, on one knee
I shall ask for your left hand...

I really hated The Darkness when they came out...hated them. But I'm not so proud as to ignore all this praise I'm seeing....I'll check them out more fully....

I'm having the same thoughts. Can't say that I hated them, but I didn't see what all the fuss was about and thought they were kind of a joke, but I'm almost willing to give 'em another shot. I do see their first cd in the used bins quite a bit. I guess for allot of folks that got caught up in the hype, once the novelty wore off, the cd's were quickly dumped.

Now that they've broken up and all the hype has died down, it's safe to check them out and be able to assess them on their true merits instead of through the filter of popular (aka "meathead") opinion. Wink I think you'll really dig 'em if you give them a listen with fresh ears Shawn. The songwriting is spectacular. The Darkness - Page 2 309780

It probably won't grab you as quickly, but it's a real grower! IMO, the songwriting, sound and production matured a LOT since the first one, but I like them both a lot, just for different reasons. cool

My personal picks from the second one:

Knockers
Dinner Lady Arms
Hazel Eyes (natch!)
Bald

...and the song "Girlfriend" sounds like a total friggin' disco song a la KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND or THE SPINNERS from 1977, but it's hard to ignore! lol!

So lemme get this straight. The Stone Gods are the same guys as The Darkness but without Justin Hawkins, right? That song sounded pretty good. I could listen to a whole cd of that.
