It sounds different but that was too expected with all the new musicians. We heard in 1999 with Oh My God (appropriate title, it's OMG BAD) and later through the leaked Demos. Actually some of the 2006 demos like TWAT, IRS and Better sound even better than the album versions because they got overloaded with additional guitar and drum layers, just so Bumblefoot and Frank Ferrer could be squeezed into the album. 2006's Better was great. So was the 1999 version of Catcher in the Rye featuring Brian May, while the album version has Robin Finck raping the song (how can such a crappy guitarists be so well-known and even famous?)
I actually like quite a few of the songs on the album. Especially Sorry that sounds like a weird mix of Black Sabbath meets Pink Floyd and If the World is another weird but good song.
Of course it doesn't come close to AFD or the Illusions and expectations were high, especially after the Music Media hyped it like there's no tomorror and got their facts wrong (First album in XX years, most i saw was 17, as they thought UYI was the last GNR album - in fact it was only in the works for about 10-11 years, after the classic lineup completely broke down in 1997/98, they were at that point working on a new, unrelated album we will never hear)

It's a grower. I didn't like it at first, but after a few listens it just clicked all of a sudden. It's my favourite Gn'R album and one of my top 20 albums ever.

I wouldnt go that far for me personally but it is a good album, as far as GNR goes my all time fav will always be Appetite for Destruction

Axl said if he were to do a true solo album it would be more along the lines of NIN and "Oh My God".

It's ok for an Axl Rose solo album. It just shouldn't be under the "GNR" name.

I can't disagree that is really the Axl Rose Project then a true Guns n Roses album, but I am in the minority in this opinion, but I loved the album, it was one of the most bloated, everything but the kitchen sink type of production, but I found the songs interesting and the lyrics are insightful look at the Axl Rose's mind.

Some great songs on the album IMO.

Legally he owns the name, that stemmed during the UYI tours in the 90s, does that mean I agree with him using that name for his album? Iommi did the exact same thing with Black Sabbath for many years and a lot of people here don't seem to have a problem with that, so what's the problem with Axl doing it?

It probably has something to do with the quality of output coming from those names. Iommi's work with Sabbath is highly regarded by most here, while most of Axl's isn't.
