Carlos Martinez is sucking again. Ever since he's come back from the DL his control has been terrible. Counting tonight he's now walked 17 batters in 11.2 innings.
3-3 in the 5th and Martinez has already thrown 95 pitches.

Yeah that Saudi Arabia/Russia match was riveting.
I really hope Fox's ratings in the US are taking a huge hit; pre-empting all their regular network AND local programming for this? And when it wasn't the World Cup it was the US Open. If someone had forced me to watch Fox this weekend I'd have confessed to anything.

Watched the Cardinals salvage the final game against the Chicago Maddons last night 5-0. On to Philly tonight.

Man, since that match there have been SO many great matches. I mean really good ones. Granted, there will always be snoozers, just like a 13-5 thrashing by the Cubs!

I did see one interesting thing about the World Cup. The country of Mexico was so excited about their team's win that they actually registered on the Richter scale. Seriously. Apparently everyone in the country was jumping up and down or stomping their feet or whatever and it actually registered on Mexican seismographs.

And tonight the Cardinals are being generous visitors by air-conditioning Citizens Bank Ballpark with 13 strikeouts in 7.1 innings. It's 4-2 Phillies.
EDIT: In the last two innings the Cardinals have had the tying runs on base with less than two outs and still could not score thanks to a season-high 18 strikeouts. Ironically they just scored their third run on a strikeout but the ball got away from the Phillies catcher. So now it's first and third two outs and 4-3 Phillies in the 9th. Holy crap! 18 strikeouts already! Good grief.
EDIT2: And down to their last strike again, the Cardinals tied it up on a pinch hit single by Kolten Wong. Six innings worth of strikeouts yet somehow it's still a tie game. What a whacky game!
See, now this is a fun sport to watch. Unlike soccer where a tie score of 0-0 is an acceptable ending.

Watched the Pirates take the first game in the series against the Brewers last night 1-0 behind a gem of a pitching game by Trevor Williams, allowing only one hit in 7 innings.

The Cardinals struckout an incredible 19 times last night. 19! More than 6 innings worth of whiffing. Holy crap.

Watching the Cardinals come back on the Phillies again. Let's see if the bullpen can manage to avoid pouring gasoline on the Phillies this time.
EDIT: Oh crap, I no sooner entered that post when the game came back from commercial break to announce that Greg "The $14M Dumpster Fire" Holland is the new pitcher. Good grief, countdown to how long it takes the Phillies to rally from the new 6-4 deficit.
EDIT2: Amazing. A 1-2-3 inning for Holland. I'm not sure I've seen that from him all year.

I watched the Pirates play a feeble game against the Brewers. At one point, they were down 3-0 but we're able to claw back for 2 runs but came up a bit short.

Watched the Cardinal pen blow yet another game today 4-3 to the Phillies. Worse yet, Michael Wacha left the game in the 4th with an apparent oblique strain and anyone who follows sports knows how those things can just linger and linger.
All 3 of these games were decided by one run and were real battles with both teams coming back from deficits. Kudos to the Phillies who are way ahead of schedule in their "rebuilding" process.

Watched the Cardinals finally hang on to one against Milwaukee 3-2. Miles Mikolas picked up his 8th win. And for once the bullpen held on to a lead.

I haven't watched one inning of baseball this weekend. The Pirates have really y be downhill and aren't worth the time. I can't believe this is the same team that for the first 2 months of the season was vying for first place in the division. Now they are trying to reach last.

I can't believe the Reds have won 7 in a row including a 4 game sweep of the Mighty Chicago Maddons this weekend.

On MLB Central this morning they had a story about Seattle giving away a James Paxton bobblehead tomorrow. The bobblehead comes with a detachable eagle on its shoulder.
It's based on this incident from early in the season:
That's one of the more clever MLB giveaways I've heard about.

Well unfortunately I watched the Cardinals lose 3 straight to the Atlanta Braves over the weekend. And they were ugly losses. Pitching sucked, defense sucked and offense sucked.
I just read an article talking about it being time for the Cardinals to sell and I agree. This is about 4 years in a row of utter mediocrity so I say listen to bids on pretty much any player other than SS Paul DeJong and pitcher Jack Flaherty.

Welcome to Pittsburgh Pirate fandom. Did you catch the score of last nights game between them and the Dodgers? Thank god it was on the west coast and I didn't watch any of that debacle.
