At least those damn games have mostly stopped interrupting my local news.

Just started watching the Cardinals at Dbacks.

Been relaxing and watching baseball since it's too damn hot to do anything outside.  So far I've watched:

Red Sox / Nats
Yankees / Braves
Orioles / Phillies

Cardinals are in Arizona and that game doesn't start until around 9pm so I won't see much of that one (which is probably just as well given how crappy the Cards are playing)

Watching the White Sox and Reds.

Was going to watch the lowly Pirates and Dodgers but somehow the cable went out but yet the internet is working.

Watched the Cardinals take 2 out of 3 against the Dbacks in AZ last night.  It's about time we won a series against a team with a winning record.

Hell, it's about time we won a series period.  This team is so underachieving.  STL is by no means an NL powerhouse but I do think they should be better than a mere 3 games over .500

Thanks to the Cardinals taking 2 out of 3 from Arizona and the Dodgers sweeping the Pirates. LA has now moved into a tie for the division!

And last night we clobbered the Giants and my "pal" Johnny "kicks like a girl" Cueto 11-2.  It's been a good road trip so far.

We lost 3-2 to the Giants last night as the Cardinal bullpen did what it's so good at doing...sucking.


Today we beat the Giants by the same score 3-2 as Carlos Martinez again looked like the "ace" he's supposed to be; that's his second solid start since coming off the DL after really sucking for the first two.  The bullpen again tried to blow it as Martinez only gave up 1 run in 6 innings but they managed to hold on this time.

Angels and Dodgers. Yasiel Puig delivered a 3 run homer in the 1st!!

Just watched the Pirates beat the Nationals.

Watched the Phillies shut out the Mets this afternoon.  I'm really surprised at how the NL East is panning out so far this season.  The Phillies and the Braves are both way ahead of their "rebuilding" schedule and the Nationals are playing just as pathetically as the Cardinals.

Watching the Rangers at Red Sox.

Watched the Cards get clobbered by the Reds.  If the Reds had any kind of pitching they'd be a force because they've been raking the ball all season.

It's brutally hot outside so I'm inside watching the Pirates (who have been playing much better lately) and the Brewers in the first game of a double header. The Pirates are currently winning 2-1 in the bottom of the 5th.

It's hot as hell here too; I actually caught the end of the Pirates/Brewers game before the Cardinals/Reds game started. 

Right now it's Cards-1, Reds-0 in the 4th but I fully expect that score to change drastically before it's over.  Rookie Jack Flaherty is starting for STL and he just worked his way out of a jam in the top of the 4th.  The kid has been good as a starter but I expect the crappy Cardinal pen to rear its ugly head before this game is over.

And I was right.  Flaherty was pulled after the second rain delay.  He went 5 innings and allowed no runs on 2 hits.  Cards lost 8-2 so you figure out what happened.  After the game the Cardinals fired manager Mike Matheny and hitting coach John Mabry.  About time.

Today I watched STL get interim manager Mike Schildt a win in his first game thanks to "swing man" pitcher John Gant throwing 4 hitless, scoreless innings against the Reds which is quite a feat given the Reds' offense.  All Star Miles Mikolas really struggled in his 4 innings so we needed somebody to step up and eat some innings and Gant did way more than that.

Watching the International Cup Championship Game between Japan and USA Red. USA Red is leading 10 to 5.

In person, I watched the Pirates inexplicably win their 5th game straight over the Brewers 7-6 in extra innings.

I'm curious Toho, what do you think of the firing of Matheny. I'm rather surprised by it myself.

I'm only surprised by the timing. 

People have been calling for Matheny's head for the last several years and about halfway thru last year I joined them.  The guy is just too old school to relate to today's players.  I mean last year he got into it with Yadier Molina for crying out loud; that was the writing on the wall.  Then this year he's not on speaking terms with Dexter Fowler and the article about Bud Norris "hazing" rookie Jordan Hicks and Matheny basically saying today's players are too soft was the final straw.  The word is upper management was none to pleased with Matheny's comments in that article.  Couple that with the utter mediocrity of the last 3 years and the fact that multiple younger players this year are struggling and it was time for not only Matheny but also hitting coach Mabry to go.

The only thing that seems weird to me is that the didn't do it either during the past off-season or after this season since it's pretty much a lost cause this year.
