Queensryche.
Never much of a FW fan, although I've often toyed with getting some of their material. Especially the older stuff.

I'd say both bands had a similar, commercial sound in the late '80s/early '90s period (that's not to say they were clones of each other, of course). Well, No Exit was heavier and even somewhat thrashy at times, but some songs on Perfect Symmetry and Parallels are about as commercial as Queensryche was on Mindcrime; OTOH, they never quite reached the commercialness of some tracks off Empire. Assuming "commercial" means "radio-friendly" rather than "commercially successful", that is.
Also, never thought I'd see someone call John Arch a bad singer. Blasphemy!
Did Fates Warning ever have a radio hit? I'm not knocking them, just asking a genuine question. Did any of their albums ever chart or get radio/MTV airplay?

Yep, they got some radio play and MTV play with this one:

They got some MTV Headbanger's Ball airplay with "Through Different Eyes" and "Eye to Eye" (why the fixation on eyes BTW?) but I don't think they ever really had a hit. Oh yeah, a bit with "Point of View" too.
Fates Warning for me.....Perfect Symmetry is probably my favorite by them.

Two SUPREME bands back in the 80s!
Queensrÿche does come out as winners in this battle, though it does indeed give me a bad conscience when thinking about "Awaken The Guardian".

Fates by a country mile. 6 ten out of ten lps (TSW, ATG, PS, Parallels, IO, APSOG) and probably my all time favorite track (The ivory gate of dreams). Also "monument" is enough to wipe the floor with everything q'ryche did after the 80's. The only drawback is the long period since their last masterpiece (Still Remains). Although "Wish" has strong potential to become one.

Fates Warning all the way! I love Queensryche's first EP and really like the first three records, but FW is just one of the best bands ever imo. Awaken the Guardian might be my favorite US power metal record ever, and the more melodic Alder stuff is phenomenal as well.

Oh, and Mark Zonder is one of the best drummers of all time. There.

I don't like Queensrÿche after Operation: Mindcrime, and even their earliest stuff pales in comparison to Fates Warning's last two albums with John Arch.

Love me some Queensryche (that is empire and back plus the new ToddRyche)..........and.....I haven't heard Fates Warning outside of a couple casual previews at a music store. Should probably remedy that.

I'd recommend The Spectre Within and Awaken the Guardian.

Queensryche, up to Empire. Fates Warning, everything. So FW wins it for me.

You shouldn't have ruined that Fates Warning thread you started. We actually had a decent conversation going on in there.

Which era of FW? I'm one of those weirdos who prefers the A Pleasant Shade of Gray thru FWX selection of albums.

This is pretty much my favorite song by them:
I am also a fan of the OSI albums.
As far as this poll is concerned, I could break it into two sections: From 1984 -1994: Queensryche From 1997 - present: Fates Warning
