2012: Ice Age (2011)

Yet another zero budget disaster film from The Asylum that rips off both of Roland Emmerich's then-recent end of the world epics, '2012' and 'The Day After Tomorrow' (neither of which were really deserving of a ripoff in the first place!).

Volcanic eruptions cause a giant rogue glacier to break loose and bear down on the continental U.S. (at 200 miles per hour!). As the East Coast slowly freezes solid, a family must race from Maine to New York in order to rescue their estranged daughter.

As usual for an Asylum film, '2012: Ice Age' features a ridiculous script, D-list stars (Patrick 'Little House on the Prairie' Labyorteaux! Julie 'Growing Pains' McCullough!), bad acting and hilariously cheap special effects.

That said, I still liked this better than either of Emmerich's bloated, pretentious epics!

Emmerich's movies are too dumb to be labeled pretentious, I think "incompetent" works just just fine.

You ever heard him talk about "Day After Tomorrow?" He actually seemed to think that he was making some kind of Bold Statement with that movie. Yeah, Roland, it was a real "message" film. (rolls eyes).

The only message in The Day After Tomorrow is "Damn! Emmy Rossum is HOT!"

TODAY I WATCHED (TV-series, Movies, Cinema Playlists) 2013 - Page 2 600full-emmy-rossum

The only redeeming quality of The Day After Tomorrow.

Rams vs Titans

If the Rams could only stop shooting themselves in the foot they might actually win more games.  Two costly fumbles doomed them.

At least we've apparently found our running back;  another great game by rookie Zac Stacy.

Eagles vs. Raiders.

The Eagles obliterated the Raiders with Nick Foles throwing 7 touchdowns. It is safe to say Michael Vick is done in Philly.

Yep, Netflix is where I saw this one. They've got another one there called "100 Below Zero" which looks irresistibly cheezy (tag line: "COLD AS HELL.") so that'll probably be next on my list.

Gravity in 3D. As good as you've heard, and one of the few films to 'need' to be seen in 3D.

Out Of The Dark - a typical 80s slasher/murder movie (fairly light on the gore) with a pretty interesting cast, including Karen Black, Bud Cort, and Divine (his last film)

Followed that up with watching the original Frankenstein on Svengoolie. Truly a classic but I can't help but laugh at a few scenes in this and The Bride Of Frankenstein because of Young Frankenstein.

Friday night - The Ladykillers
Very disappointing, especially coming from the Cohen Brothers. Most of the characters were just down-right annoying. Tom Hanks' Foghorn Leghorn impression, anytime Marlon Wayans was on-screen, the retarded football player, ugh. The only redeeming quality was JK Simmons and his bitchin' mustache.

Saturday night - CBGB
Pretty good. I'm not a big fan of most of the punk bands featured within (with one HUGE exception), but I enjoyed it. Although a movie that prominently features the Ramones, yet contains no Ramones music was odd. It was substituted with Joey's solo stuff, but it didn't quite synch. I guess someone wouldn't part with the rights to their songs. Too bad.

Sunday night - Killing Them Softly
Seemed pretty good, but 45 minutes into it, I started falling asleep. Ain't used to this daylight savings time-shift. I'll probably finish it up tonight.

.
The original version is a classic, this remake was unnecessary and should have been avoided. Definitely check out the 1955 version if you get a chance, starring Alec Guiness, Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom.

The guys at work warned me that it was terrible, but I wanted to give it a shot just because it's the Cohen Brothers and I'm a fan of their work. Well, mostly. The premise was fine, but the execution was just terrible. I also understood it was a remake, but it's unlikely that I'll ever catch the original.

At least I can say I've seen it now and tell others to avoid the same mistake I made. And it chased my wife away from the couch for the evening and left me alone with the tv Laughing

I'm sure that rights/clearances was the main reason they didn't use a "real" Ramones track. Although, geez, Lord knows there are more than enough Ramones tribute albums/cover versions out there that sound close enough to the real thing, and they could've probably licensed one of those dirt cheap.

I thought it was a cool flick, though the punk purists are apparently up in arms about the many timeline and historical inaccuracies.

Yea, I'm sure they had to take some liberties to make it fit nicely within the alloted 90 minutes or so. It was entertaining enough for me and the wife. She actually stayed awake for it, so that's saying something. "Was there really a band called 'Dead Boys'?" Razz

Laughing very hard Speaking of which, I saw a commercial for some kind of high-end high-def TV/sound system thingie last night which used clips of the Dead Boys "Sonic Reducer" to demonstrate the system's awesomeness! That was kind of odd. Very Happy

I think the Dead Boys got more screen time in the movie than the Ramones did...which was kinda weird (esp. with that kid from "Harry Potter" playing Cheetah Chrome!), but apparently Hilly tried managing them for a while (which ended disastrously, if the film is to be believed).

Dude the Dead Boys were great, Guns N Roses covered their tune 'Aint It Fun' on their punks cover disc, and Stiv Bators, sings backround vocals on Alice Cooper's Trash album

That was my wife asking about the Dead Boys, not me. Of course I know who they are. Any band covered by GnR and Overkill are ok with me. Wink

I finally got this on DVD; for years it was only available on VHS.  It's another member of the 'so bad it's good' genre, at least in my book
