Only because they didn't want to pay Toho for the rights to the Rodan name. It does look like a cross between Gaos and Rodan (I always preferred Gaos in that Daiei vs Toho monster feud)
I thought it was because there are two of these Muto creatures and only one Rodan.

While the Japanese justifiably slammed the first attempt at a US Godzilla, they're not being too kind to this US version of Godzilla either
Quote :
“He’s an American fatty,” one fan posted after the Japanese trailer and images were released. “He got fat in America on cola and pizza,” tweeted another. Such comments have been cropping up a lot, with Godzilla referred to as “chubby and cute,” “couch potato Godzilla,” “Supersized,” “Marshmallow-Godzilla,” and weighed down with “middle-age spread.” One commenter pointed out that he didn’t seem to have much of a neck, while another said, “It looks like a seal.”

I think he looks awesome, and maybe they just feel like he's their guy (somewhat justifiably so) and nothing will do. But, I say they're picking nits.

I was planning to see it alone tonight after work (since my wife is working til 11 and I figured she didn't want to see it) but upon hearing my plan she did say she wanted to go so we're going to the local drive in to catch it tomorrow night (even though it will be chilly).

Just got back from seeing it. I recommend it to everyone everywhere who were sorely disappointed by the 1998 Godzilla movie (like me and the entire world was) and still ultimately stuck in that era of Godzilla never being touched by an American movie studio again.

Okay, saw it!
Spoiler:
Liked that there were the other monsters. Very cool. Like that Godzilla was not the "bad guy". Overall, very pleased and look forward to what/how they do the next one.

When I graduated from Navy boot camp in the winter of '99, that was a reward for us, to watch that abomination. I have no doubt the new one more than makes up for it. Look forward to seeing this eventually.

I loved it. It shits all over the one from '98.

On a side note, prepping for this 2014 version me and the girls watched the original on Netflix. A classic, yes, truly, but man have we come a long way! At supper two nights ago my youngest pulled her eaten corn-cob off its stick and sort of awkwardly spit it on her plate from too high up and my oldest and I burst out laughing because she looked just like original Godzilla spitting a subway train out of his mouth. My wife sits in silence, wondering what's become of her children.
Anyhow, go see the new one!

Wow. Did the Petty Officers and/or Chiefs get jeered heavily afterwards by the recruits?
